BUTLER II DR., Cooley Dr. Cooley Butler II of Los Angeles, CA, passed away at age 82 on July 31, 2018, with his family by his side at his home in Austin, TX. Cooley is survived by his wife Suzanne (Owsley) Butler; his four children, Gloria Matthews and her husband John Matthews (Littleton, CO), Julie Butler (Austin, TX), Michael Butler and his wife Coni Butler (Austin, TX) and Karen Butler Hazeltine and her husband Eliot Hazeltine (Coralville, IA); ten grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace Pierce and Zoe Louise (Pickering) Butler of Los Angeles, CA; and his brother William Wallace Butler of Calistoga, CA. Cooley was born September 18, 1935, in Grass Valley, CA. He graduated from the Harvard School (Los Angeles) in 1953, and then attended Stanford University, where he made many lifelong friendships as a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity. In 1960, Cooley was a top graduate from Stanford Medical School. In 1959, Cooley married Catherine Suzanne Owsley, a new graduate of Stanford's nursing school. An internship at Duke University was followed by a brief stint as a Captain in the US Army before completing his residency at the University of Iowa. After a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, he commenced his career as a Clinical Pathologist, working at teaching hospitals affiliated with medical schools, where he could both practice as a physician and teach students (University of Arizona 1970-1977; University of New Mexico 1977-1985). During those years, he also continued to serve the country's veterans by working at VA hospitals. He then joined a private practice in 1987 at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, CA, where he retired in 1995. During retirement, Cooley and Suzanne enjoyed raising Italian Greyhound dogs and traveling around the country in their RV to visit friends and family, before deciding to settle in Las Vegas in 2000. In 2010, Cooley and Suzanne moved to Querencia at Barton Creek, a retirement community in Austin, TX and his final home. An athletic man through most of his life, Cooley enjoyed playing basketball, beach volleyball, running, and cycling for many years. He was also an aviation enthusiast, owning a succession of small single-engine planes that he used for recreation or family trips. On any given weekend, you could find him in the skies around Tucson, Albuquerque, or San Diego enjoying the scenery! A celebration of Cooley's life will be held on Saturday, September 15, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Longhorn Room at Querencia at Barton Creek, 2500 Barton Springs Blvd., Austin, Texas, 78735. A Rosary will then be held in his honor at the Incarnate Word Chapel at St. Gabriel's School, 2500 Wimberley Lane, Austin, TX, from 4:00-4:30. Donations may be made in Cooley's name to the .
