David N. SMITH

1932 - 2015 Obituary Condolences
SMITH, David N.
David Newland Smith, 82, was called home March 5, 2015. Born in the Appalachian Mountains in Brevard, N.C., on October 17, 1932. David came from a family of moonshiners and bootleggers. He chose a different path, joining the Air Force after graduating from Brevard High School in 1951, and serving during the Korean War. He met the love of his life, Betty Jane Kipp, on a blind date in May 1955 while stationed at Bergstrom AFB. They were engaged three months later and married in Austin on July 6, 1956.

David resigned his commission with the Air Force in 1956 in order to attend the University of Texas, graduating in June 1959 with a BFA in Radio Broadcasting. While attending UT, he was offered a position at KTBC-TV, where he spent his entire 35-year career as a photographer/reporter. He covered many significant events such as the Charles Whitman shooting and the growth of Austin, including the expansion of IH-35 from a 2-lane highway to the corridor it is today.

David enjoyed many hobbies including arrowhead hunting, genealogy, and playing bluegrass music on the guitar, banjo, and dulcimer. He was an avid bird watcher and a former member of the Capitol Clown Club, where he was known as "Juggles." He was a devout member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church.

David is preceded in death by his wife Betty and by his parents Helen and Malcolm Smith (Bud and Buck). He is survived by his children Daniel Z. Smith and wife Jeannell, Holly Wright and husband Michael, Evangeline Rose Domel, and Shawn Marie Cansler; grandchildren Andrew, Aaron, and Annabel Smith, Justin and Brittany Wright, Carson and Bailey Domel, David, Kevin, and Christina Dunnigan, and John and Hannah Cansler; and 2 great-grandchildren Nathaniel Smith and Avery Arnold. He is also survived by brother Raymond Smith and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family expresses its gratitude to the staff at Horizon Bay (Brookdale) for the care extended to David. Visitation will be held from 5-7 P.M. Sunday March 8, 2015, at Ramsey Funeral Home, 5600 Williams Dr., Georgetown, TX. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, March 9, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 200 W. Anderson Ln., Austin, with burial to follow at Memorial Hill Park, North IH-35 at Dessau Road.
