Gloria Benton SMITH Obituary
SMITH, Gloria Benton Gloria Benton Smith, 93 A longtime resident of Austin, passed away comfortably in her home on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. She was born January 16, 1925 to Garland and Purna Benton. Each of her parent's families moved to Austin in the early 1900s because it is where the Texas School for the Deaf is located. Both of Gloria's parents were deaf, and the school is where they met, fell in love, and decided to start a family. Having learned sign language as a child, Gloria was always very animated with her hands when she spoke. It was an endearing trait of hers, which drew people in and made them feel part of whatever she was talking about. Gloria graduated from Austin High and went on to work for the federal government for nearly 35 yearsthe last 28 of those with the IRS. She retired in 1988 from the Support Branch of the Computer Services Division. After retirement she became a docent for the LBJ Library, where she enjoyed volunteering her time for many years. Gloria was passionate about family (pets included), and her faith. She was a member of All Saints' Episcopal Church, where she attended services regularly for many decades. She had four children, Diane V. Hendrickson, Morris W. Smith Jr., Ronald D. Smith, and Kenneth L. Smith; 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her parents, Gloria was preceded in death by her brother Pat Benton, her daughter Diane, son Ken, granddaughter Michelle, and great-granddaughter Angel. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, May 18, 2018 at Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail, Austin, TX.
