Jeanne Mund LAGOWSKI Obituary
LAGOWSKI, Jeanne Mund Jeanne Mund Lagowski passed away on September 11, 2018 in Austin, Texas, after a distinguished career at The University of Texas at Austin. At the time of her death, she was a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Neuroscience, College of Natural Sciences. Dr. Lagowski was born in St. Louis, Missouri on November 17, 1929. She received undergraduate and MS degrees ('51 and '52) in Chemistry from Bradley University and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1957 for her work in heterocyclic chemistry. During 1957-1959, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Cambridge University, England, in the organic chemistry group led by Lord Alexander Todd. Her work with A. R. Katritzky at Cambridge led to their co-authoring one of the classic textbooks on heterocyclic chemistry. In 1959, she became a research scientist in the Genetics Foundation in the Department of Zoology at the University of Texas. She joined the Zoology faculty in 1973 and was subsequently appointed Associate Dean Health Professions. Teaching and administration were her primary focus. Dr. Lagowski was elected a Danforth Associate in 1977 and to Leadership Texas in 1988. In 1995, she was named a Bradley Centurion. She and her husband Joseph Lagowski were honored in June 2011 when Bradley University named an academic department after them: the Mund-Lagowski Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. During her academic career, she received a number of teaching excellence awards, including the Blunk Memorial Professorship, a UT College of Natural Sciences Advisory Council Award, and a UT College of Natural Sciences award. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Lagowski and her brother, Louis Mund. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Austin Catholic Parish, 2026 Guadalupe St, Austin, Texas on Monday, September 17 at 10:00 am.
