Johnny Lyon Obituary

Johnny Foster Lyon Memorial services for Johnny Foster Lyon, 73, of Bryan, Texas are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 6, 2010 beginning at 12:00 noon at the Texas Hall of Fame in Bryan, Texas. The service will be followed with a military burial service at Providence Baptist Cemetery. Dr. Malcolm Bane will officiate both ceremonies. The services will be under the care and direction of Strickland Funeral Homes of Caldwell, Texas. Mr. Lyon passed away peacefully, surrounded by loving family and friend in his home in Bryan, Texas following a courageous year-long battle with cancer on November 28, 2010 on a beautiful Sunday morning. Johnny Lyon was a model of grace under pressure, he handled an extremely challenging year with courage, dignity, and determination. He remained a "Fightin' Texas Aggie" to the end. Johnny was born on January 17, 1937 to Johnnie R. Lyon and Louise Margaret Warlick Lyon, in Bryan, Texas. He was the absolute apple of his folks' eye, and he managed to live a life of accomplishments that clearly illustrated their admiration and confidence in him was justified. The life lessons his parents imparted to him were cherished and often repeated by Johnny. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Billy John Lyon, and a son, John Ross Lyon. He is survived by his wife, Suzy Joseph Lyon; and two daughters, Terrilyn Lyon Seale and her husband Todd and Amber Lyon Clowe and her husband Duncan and their two children, Emerson and Parker Clowe. Johnny served in the USAF from 1960 - 1981 as an Air Force Pilot, serving in Vietnam and retired as a Lt. Colonel. He also served at Officer Training School, at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas, imparting maturity, wisdom, and leadership to all he commanded. Upon his return from the Air Force he built and opened The Texas Hall of Fame, along with lifelong friend Paul Emola. The Texas Hall of Fame continues today as the premier live country music venue in the Bryan-College Station area. When he was not busy with all the jobs on his own plate, he operated his father's beloved ranch between Snook and Caldwell, Texas. Johnny graduated from Texas A&M University (Class of 1959) with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He later attended Sam Houston State University and earned a secondary teaching certificate. Johnny was a life member of Sigma Chi. Johnny Lyon had a little saying, "It's not what you make, it's what you don't spend." And although he was widely known for his frugality, he was the most generous man in Texas, having helped many, many friends, family and his community in their time of need. In this spirit of wise spending, the family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Providence Baptist Church and Brazos Valley Hospice Care. He would greatly appreciate any assistance these two fine organizations would receive in his memory. Johnny Lyon was a lifelong entertainer, with his beloved Country Nu Notes he made the rounds all over Texas and for many of the musicians and fans that adored him, the music stopped on November 28, 2010. Visit his website to learn more of the man and his music. www.johnnylyon.com Simply stated: we have lost a man of character, who possessed a million special talents and exhibited splendid behavior throughout his life. He was absolutely wonderful. The family wishes to acknowledge the support, friendship and love shared with Johnny Lyon by his dear friends, Joe and Judy Powell. No two people could ever have provided more comfort, assistance, and love than them, They helped provide "the peace that passes all understanding". God bless them both for their love and dedication. My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Lyon a few years ago when he came to play in Corpus Christi, Texas. After the concert we all went out for a bit to eat. The next day he was playing at Schroeder Hall and we went to go hear him play, we really enjoyed his music. Just knowing him for that short time we have always and will always hold him in the highest regards...he was so kind to us, and just now finding out about his passing we are both saddened. And thank you so much for your service to our Great Nation. We will miss him and it was a honor to have known him.

Johnny was my Military Science Professor and the Commandant of Cadets of the Air Force R.O.T.C. unit at SouthWest Texas. We struck up a forty year friendship that began in the fall of 1969. He was one of the hardest working individuals I ever met. He was a pleasure to be around and a great Texan. I will miss him. Glen Allan Hardwick ( Houston, Texas)

I remember hearing Johnny first playing at the Golden Stallion in San Antonio, Tx. I became friends with him and the band members, I would always go see Johnny and Judy sing when they were in town. They would play at The Golden Stallion, Farmer's Daughter, Flores Country Store in Helotes, Tx and Country Gold. I still have an album I bought from him back in the 1980's that Johnny signed for me. He was such a nice man, he use to let me go on the bus with them during breaks and I would sit at the table with them also. He will an entainer I will never forget. My sympathy goes out to the Lyon's family and May God be with you at the time.

Long before Tony & I married, I considered Johnny a friend of mine.
I met him through my affiliation with Crash Stewart. He was not only a great entertainer and friend, but he also shared my passion for helping others in need, as I was always able to rely on him to volunteer not just to perform, but in any way I needed his help with the myriad benefits I've helped with over the years. He was a true friend to Tony, as well. Tony was a full-time Nu-Note back in the early-mid 70's & on numerous occassions since then when Johnny needed a fiddle player. He was there when we married, when I had Tony's 50th surprise birthday party, when our son Steve married, & when we had the party to celebrate Melissa's graduation from his beloved A&M. Our family is deeply saddened by his passing and he will be greatly missed by so many. Our prayers will continue to be with his family & friends.
God speed, Johnny.
Fond memories, Tony & Brenda Pickens

I was just telling someone this week about cousin Johnny Foster. He was one of my dad's, Ed Lyon's, closest relatives on the Lyon side. I remember when Johnny was at Southwest Texas. He asked my brother and me if we wanted to join his country band. At the time we were rockers and ended up traveling and recording in Europe; but every once in a while I wonder if we shouldn't have tried both. My siblings and I enjoyed our reaquaintence with Johnny and the rest of the Lyons at two or three reunions and we will miss him greatly.

My family has known Johnny for many years & always went to see him at the Farmers Daughter. I even named my daughter Shelly after a song that he & janet would sing and it was Shelly's Winter Love. After she was born when they would sing that song either Johnny or Janet would hold her when they sang that song. Johnny will be deeply missed and we will miss you deeply. My sympathy to the family.

We hosted Johnny Lyon on what would be one of his last performances; on October 16,2010At our ranch and venue the HORSEMANS Bar, we visited with him on his bus. he was clearly very Ill at the time but insisted on going on stage'despite our assurances he need not to wear his self out. when he came on stage he stunned everyone including us; his voice was strong.clear just beautiful as ever. He was then and will forever be a Country Legend of unparralled caliber; He will dearly missed and remembered.

When I drove Darrell McCall's bus, we came upon Johnny's bus broken down on a back country Texas road one day. We stopped, and I loaned Johnny a fuel filter from our bus and got him on his way. We were friends after that, and I will miss Johnny. The music world, ESPECIALLY the Texas music world will mourn his loss. Godspeed, Johnny........
