Paul Gottlieb Obituary

Dr. Paul David Gottlieb (1943- 2003) died of liver cancer November 1, 2003, at the age of 59. He is survived by Dr. Nell H. Gottlieb, his wife of 33 years; daughter, Dr. Erin A. Gottlieb and son-in- law, Dr. Eric A. Bedell of Galveston; his brother, Dr. Michael S. Gottlieb of Pasadena, California; and his mother, Beatrice Gottlieb of Highland Park, New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his brother, Steven R. Gottlieb; and his father, Arthur Gottlieb. A research immunobiologist, Dr. Gottlieb received his Bachelor of Science degree from Princeton University and his Ph.D. from The Rockefeller University. He was a post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University and was on the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology prior to coming to the University of Texas in 1980. At the time of his death, Dr. Gottlieb was Professor in the Section of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and Director of the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. He made important contributions as a scientist, teacher and administrator. His research focused on the genetics of the immune system of the mouse. He co-authored more than 70 articles in scientific journals and served as a committee member of the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Cancer Society. Funeral services will be at the Congregation Beth Israel, 3901 Shoal Creek Blvd. at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 3, 2003. Cook-Walden/Lamar Funeral Home is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Paul D. Gottlieb Memorial Fund for the Biological Sciences, School of Biological Sciences, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin 78712.
