J.L. AKRIDGE Obituary

J. L. Akridge of Georgetown, Texas soared from earth to glory on July 3, 2014. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, LaVada Akridge; daughters: Lucinda Girdner and Catherine Akridge; 7 nephews and 5 nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, 2 sisters and a nephew. Mr. Akridge graduated from Temple High School and Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos where he earned a Bachelor's of Science and Master of Arts degrees. He chose a career as a school principal and superintendent while also teaching chemistry, mathematics and coaching tennis; he concluded his career as a consultant at the Texas Education Agency in Austin. Mr. Akridge served the community through his Lions Clubs International work for 55 years: Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville past-president, Central Texas Eye Bank's board of directors and past-president and charter member of the Georgetown Evening Lions Club. He earned many accolades for his dedication and countless hours of service. In addition, he served the Georgetown community through his church memberships where he loved teaching God's Word for many years. He also gave his time as an election judge, Meals-on-Wheels volunteer and as an activist in the Democratic Party. He was appointed to Georgetown's Board of Adjustment and elected to the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature. Mr. Akridge was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Georgetown where funeral services will be held at 1:30pm on July 7, 2014 and burial following at Hillcrest Cemetery in Temple, Texas.
