Lawrence (Larry) Hay Wharton MD Lawrence (Larry) Hay Wharton MD, longtime resident of Central and West Texas, passed away on Sunday, August 18th at his home in Sun City. Larry was born in 1925 in the Bulape Congo, Africa to Christian missionary parents Conway and Ethel Wharton. He graduated from Austin High School, Austin College and UT Medical School-Galveston. Larry practiced medicine in Austin and El Paso with his focus and specialty being the treatment of alcoholism and substance dependency. His medical career highlights included Chief Residency at the Austin State Hospital, where he pioneered the development of the Stratford House (Austin Recovery), Medical Director of Sun Towers Behavioral Center in El Paso, and Medical Director of the Faulkner Center in Austin. Larry served in World War II as a bombardier in the Army Air Corps and later served many years as a medical consultant for the FAA. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Donna Wharton; his brother, Conway Wharton; his children, Roxanne Hixson husband Chuck, Claudia Wilder husband Jim and Bob Tolliver wife Catherine. Larry's sweet manner and loving kindness will be remembered by his seven grandchildren: Shelley Hixson Johnson, Jenni Hixson, Natalie Hixson Heskett, Cori and Kelly Wilder, Marc and Matt Tolliver; and five great-grandchildren: Reese, Carly, Zachary, CJ and Reed. Larry was blessed with and loved numerous nieces, nephews, friends and caring neighbors. When the good Lord called, Larry was hugging and holding the hand of his cherished nephew, Chester McDanald. For Larry, he was all about his adoring family, great golf, weekly card games with his friends and lunch with his life-long Boy Scout troop. There will be a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. on September 14 at the Ramsey Funeral Home, 5600 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas.
