Prolific and widely published journalist and author Billy Porterfield, who helped put Texas on the map as a literary destination, died Sunday after a long illness. He was 81.
Published in Austin American-Statesman on Jul. 1, 2014.
Enjoyed his column in Austin American Statesman back in the day when that publication was more amenable to his kind of regional insights and knowledge. Always thought that I would get around to reading his books. Have not yet but maybe I will. My condolences to his family. Que vaya con Dios!

I met Billy when he was the Dobie Paisano Fellow.I was the closest neighbor to the Dobie Ranch. We had a number of great visits during his stay. I remember one time when the Barton Creek flooded and he and his wife were marooned at the ranch house for almost a day. A great guy

I will miss his quick wit, his amazing grasp of Texas and world history, and his fine writing! A reporter of the "old school" who will be sorely missed!
