John Leslie Stewart, a lifelong resident of Colville, WA, passed away on September 21, 2018, in Colville, WA, at the age of 78. John was born on October 12, 1939, in Colville, the son of Leslie Eugene and Gladys Naomi (Hotchkiss) Stewart.
He attended school in Colville throughout his education and graduated in 1957. While in school, John was active in both after school athletics and work. He excelled in baseball and spent many hours working on the Draper Farm when he wasn't in class or on the sports field. Following high school, John worked along side his father and eventually took the reigns of the family logging business. He worked six to seven days a week in the woods. Logging was both his occupation and his hobby with an occasional break to hunt and fish. John married Karen Olson and their family grew with the birth of each child; P.J., Tricia, Tammy and Les and John Jr. "Hooter". John's approached life with gentle nature and constant integrity. He took great pride in providing for his family. He enjoyed his time in the woods especially when building roads, for John took the time to "do it right". In 2005, he married Edie (Dinkel) Hopper from Lewiston, Idaho. John welcomed her two boys, Ron and Kenny, into the family. John rose early each morning for work and as the years progressed and his health digressed, he slowly phased out of logging. John repurposed his time in the gardening (with a passion for roses), preparing and drying fruits, reading or just relaxing in front of the T.V. with a bowl of freshly popped popcorn. He retired "completely" from logging in 2011. In 2016, he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and fought it with a quiet determination until his passing.
John was a giant, both in his strength of presence and physique. He gave of himself with great generosity and if a hand was needed, there was little that he couldn't move or adjust with ease. He was lovingly described by his family as "John Wayne with suspenders and chain saw". Yet, he had the patience of a gardener and took time to listen to others often "digging into" into their life history. His children reminisced about his wonderful cooking skills especially crock pots and BBQ's and his steadfast presence as "the rock" of their family. His kindness extended to humans and animals alike.
In his youth, John, spent many hours boating with friends and was a member of the Royal Coachmen Car Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son, John Jr. "Hooter", step-son, Kenny Hopper. The funeral service for Mr. John L. It was great working with you and Gladys all those years. Many memories of your dropping by my office in the evening to talk to dad.
