Donald Lee Madsen

January 21, 1926 - August 17, 2013

-- The family of Don Madsen announces his gentle passing from this life, due to complications from Parkinson's Disease. Born January 20, 1926, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Lillian Wood and Swain Madsen, Don moved to Salem in 1935. Although he lived away from Salem for much of his working life, his heart was always in Oregon, and he chose to retire to his hometown in 1989.

There was never a more peaceable and good-spirited man than Don. He had a passion for sailing and was a long-time member of the Eugene Yacht Club. He enjoyed exploring the waters of Puget Sound, often with his daughters as crew. He was an ardent racquetball devotee, playing well into his eightieth year. He enjoyed reading and music. He spent his life surrounded by friends and a loving family.

Don served in the U.S. Army in WWII, a BAR rifleman with a combat Company of the 87th Infantry Division . He spent 6 months as a prisoner of war in Germany. Following the War, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Willamette University. Don married Barbara Jo (Bobbi) Loyd in December 1948. He had a long career with the Social Security Administration, and in 1985 he retired as Branch Manager of the Lynnwood, Washington, office. In retirement, Don and Bobbi were enthusiastic members of the Salem Good Samaritans until Bobbi passed away in April 2001.

Don is survived by his daughters, Donna (husband Devon Nickerson) and Carol "Kay" (husband Eric Riedl) and two grandchildren, Kate Gallagher and Paul Riedl. He was GreatPapa to Jamison and Isabelle Robles. His love will be with us always.

There will be a ceremony of military honors at Willamette National Cemetery, where Don's remains will be laid to rest at 11 am Wed. Aug. 28.
