Karen Margaret McGillivray

Newberg - Karen Margaret McGillivray, 84, passed peacefully away at her home in Friendsview Retirement Community in Newberg, Oregon on January 19, 2021. The much-loved sister, aunt and friend will be greatly missed by her community of friends and family.

Born at home on August 24, 1936, in Richland, Oregon, to parents Catharina D. (Sass) McGillivray and Kenneth M. McGillivray, Karen was raised in McMinnville and graduated cum laude with education degrees from Eastern Oregon College and Pacific School of Religion.

Karen lived her life in service to others, through her work with the Methodist Church and beyond. She was a dedicated elementary school teacher in the Salem-Keizer School District for more than three decades.

Active in the Methodist Church, Karen served on various committees and helping produce newsletters and organize events. She was an outspoken advocate for basic rights and women's rights, and knitted hundreds of hats and scarves to donate to neighbors in need. She loved travel and adventures, and she was always quick to book a room with a view when the forecast called for a storm at the coast.

Whip-smart, witty and clever, Karen spent her retirement exploring the world and sharing her love of puns, puzzles and brainteasers with her family and friends. She treasured her role as honorary grandparent to her great-niece Amara and great-nephews Ryan, Boon and Hero. Her Scottie dogs, Duncan, Robbie, and Rumble brought her great joy and companionship.

Karen is survived by her brother Kevin (Sandy) of Beaverton, brother Pete (Nancy) of Springfield, niece Allison, and nephews Scott, Todd, Mike, Steve, and Randy.

Karen was a "round a-bout" cousin. She could always find humor in every situation, and pull others up with her witty remarks. My deepest sympathy to her family.
