Kathleen ‘Kayù Messmer Obituary
Kathleen 'Kay' Messmer

Salem - Kathleen 'Kay' Penrose Walters Bailey Messmer, 84 of Salem, Oregon, December 22nd 2018, following a long period of declining health.

Kay was born in Los Angeles, California on January 19, 1934. She was the first born of five siblings, and was graduated from Fremont High School. In one of her first jobs, she took streetcars near her South L.A. home to her job at the Hormel meat-packing plant close to downtown.

Kay was widowed three times. She first was married to Roy Walters in June of 1952; they were married 19 years, and had four children. After Roy's death, she married Clay Bailey in 1973. They continued to live in Downey, California until Clay's retirement 17 years later, when they moved to Salem, Oregon. Following Clay's passing, she was married once more, to Francis Messmer.

Over her adult life, Kay worked for Weight Watchers, and supervised in-store demonstrations for KDS Marketing. She enjoyed playing cards, painting, taking road trips, and watching Hallmark movies and golf on TV. She also was actively involved with the Keizer/Salem Senior Center, where she managed the bingo program as a volunteer for 18 years.

A celebration of Kay's life will be held at Belcrest Memorial Park at 2:30 PM January 19, on what would have been her 85th birthday.

Kay is survived by her brother Michael Penrose, her three daughters, Kathy, Karen, & Dina; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Kay is preceded in death by her three husbands, and son Roy, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Willamette Valley Hospice. Her daughters wish to thank Willamette Valley Hospice for the wonderful care they gave Kay.
