Mary Susan Miller

Mary Susan Miller, 71, passed away peacefully March 27, 2021, at OHSU surrounded by her husband, Nick, and her family. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2019. Although this incurable disease ultimately proved to be terminal, Susan handled its debilitating nature with grace.

Susan was born on January 10, 1950, in Hillsboro, Oregon, to Fred and Helen Ireland and was the middle child of seven. At the age of 10, the Ireland family moved to Sublimity where she attended St. Boniface Grade School. After graduating from Regis High School, Susan attended Southern Oregon College and Oregon State University majoring in art. She went on to work as a secretary at Stayton Canning Company and met her husband of 42 years. Nick and Susan lived in Stayton for 23 years. They moved to John Day where Susan developed her love of quilting and enjoyed many quilting retreats with her friends. She worked for Grant County and the OSU Extension Office and earned her certification as a master gardener. In 2012, they retired to Prineville where they built their home together.

Susan is survived by her husband, Nick; six siblings; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at 11:00, Friday, April 9, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sublimity, Oregon. Reception following in the Parish Hall.

Susie, was a dear, sweet, fun, and loving friend who I met at Oregon State University years old, when we were young and attending college, meeting new friends, dating, and having fun at all the football, basketball games and concerts. But, we reconnected through the later years, with our former friends and met for many years, each summer with 7 of us spending some great times, sharing funny, sad, stories of our lives over the many years since college. We rediscovered our friendships and Susie was a huge part of our gathering. She brought such joy and light to our conversations. Never judging any of us, only showing love and compassion for anything life was throwing at any of us. Those many days of gathering met the world to all of us. Just woman being friends and supporting each other with love and lots of humor! It was always good for our souls to have Susie there! We learned of her love of family, quilting, gardening and her recent pup! She made us all a wonderful quilted bag for each of us one year! A beautiful and thoughtful gift that we treasure. Our hearts hurt, that she went through such a difficult time and that cancer won her body. But, I believe her wonderful soul is with us still. We all love you Susie! My sincere condolences to her family and other friends. She will be missed by many because she was so loved.
