William Richter Obituary

SUBLIMITY - William Richter, of Sublimity, 91, died Tuesday, November 20. He was born in Dickinson, North Dakota. He received a B.A. from Minot State College, North Dakota, an M.A. in History from the University of Montana, and his Doctorate in Education from the University of North Dakota.Dr. Richter's career spanned 40 years in the education profession; beginning in 1939 as a history teacher and football coach at Carter Country High School, Ekalaka, Montana. He served as a Naval officer during World War II. After several other teaching and coaching positions, he served as Vice Principal at Washington High School, Portland, from 1956 to 1963. He then moved to California, to become Principal of San Leandro High School. He joined Ohlone College, Fremont, California, in 1986, and rose to become its president in 1975. He retired from Ohlone in 1979.He loved to watch football, read history, and discuss current affairs. He was a gracious man, who was a positive influence on the lives of many, many people. His wife, the former Reva Horsley, whom he had married in Portland on March 19, 1958, preceded him in death on December 24, 2003.Survivors include his stepdaughter, Kaaren Hawkes of Salem; sons, William Richter of Hillman, Minnesota and Larry Richter of Bismarck, North Dakota; and daughter, Jean Jacobsen of Grand Forks, North Dakota; and twelve grandchildren.A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 27 at the McKillop Residence, Marian Estates. Internment will be at Williamette National Cemetery, Portland. Arrangements are by Restlawn Funeral Home.
