Garner Pool, 90, of Albany passed away Friday January 3rd.

He was born in Brentwood, Arkansas to Jesse and Helen (Bender) Pool.

Garner came with his parents to Oregon in 1934, graduating from Shedd High School in 1941, attending Moler Barber College in Portland prior to enlisting in the US Navy in 1942. He married Myrtle Spillman in 1946 in Corvallis, Garner was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1948 and moved back to Albany where he has lived since. Myrtle passed away in 1997 after 51 years of marriage. Garner married Arlene D. (Farman) Ruggles on July 10, 1999, and worked as a barber in Albany until 2012 when he retired.

Active in the American Legion and VFW, Garner was Post 10 Commander in 1959; helped create the new Linn County Veterans Memorial, serving as Memorial Association President; active in the AFL-CIO and on the UFCW 555 Labor Union for a total of 60 years and served as executive Board Secretary/Treasurer; active on the Linn County Veterans Council and was the VFW Veteran of the year in 2001 and 2003, American Legion Veteran of the year in 2007, and Grand Marshall of the Veterans Day Parade in 2009. Garner was a charter member of the Greenback 4-H Club in Shedd.

Garner is survived by his wife Arlene, daughters Verni Knight of Albany, Helen McCleery of Dallas, Carol Sayre of Oregon City, Deb Hoskins of Jefferson; sons Dale Pool of Marysville WA, and Rod Ruggles of Jefferson; brother Forest Pool of Portland, sisters Beryl Lintz of Kalispell MT, Bettie Hamm of Salem OR, Patricia Alvis of Ellijay GA, and Marjorie Davis of Bend OR; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by first wife Myrtle, brother Sylvan Pool, and sisters Fern Barrett and Joleen Irish.

A celebration of life will be 1:30 pm Sat. Feb. 1, 2014 at the Albany American Legion.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Linn County Veteran's Memorial or the American Legion Post 10 Building Fund in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 SW Washington St. Albany Or. 97321
