Kenneth Robert Blair

February 14, 1923 - May 21, 2014

Kenneth Robert Blair passed away peacefully after a brief illness on May 21, 2014. He was 91 years old. He was born in Sparta, Illinois on Feb. 14, 1923, to Robert and Mayme Blair. After high school graduation he enlisted in the navy and served in the Philippines during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and then attended Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, graduating in 1950.

In 1947, Ken met and married Betty J. Owens. They were happily married for 54 years until her passing in 2001. They had two daughters, Jo Anne and Barbara.

By 1952 they had moved to Oregon and had lived here ever since, spending a few years in Portland, several years in Medford, and the past 50 years in the Salem area.

He spent his career as a salesman, retiring from Smith, Kline, and French Laboratories, in the early 1980's. After retirement, he had a part-time printing business for several years before completely retiring.

Ken loved to travel, and he and Betty visited all 50 states over the years. He also enjoyed camping, bowling, golf, bridge, pinochle, poker, horseshoes, and reading. He volunteered for years delivering lunches for Meals on Wheels, and also in a variety of ways at his church. He was a member of First Christian Church and had previously attended Trinity United Methodist Church.

Ken is survived by his loving companion of the last 10 years, Joyce Wilson; his daughters, Jo Anne Candee of Newberg, and Barbara (David) Holler of Keizer; granddaughters, Rebecca Candee of Newberg, and Rachel (Shane) Bessett of Keizer; step-grandson,

Michael (Tina) Candee of Alabama; great grandson, Justus Bessett of Keizer; and four nephews, and one niece. He was pre-deceased by his parents; his sister, Doris Dorn; and one nephew, and one niece.

A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, May 29, at 12:00 p.m., at First Christian Church, 685 Marion St. NE, Salem, followed by a light lunch reception. Donations in his name may be sent to the Kenneth R. Blair memorial fund at First Christian Church. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
