SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco detective who led the investigation into the Zodiac serial-killer case in the late 1960s and early 1970s has died. Dave Toschi was 86.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday that Toschi died Saturday after a lengthy illness.

Five people were fatally stabbed or shot to death in Northern California in 1968 and 1969 and their killer sent taunting letters and cryptograms to the police and newspapers. Toschi was put on the case after a San Francisco taxi driver was shot to death in October 1969, but he was taken off nine years later when he admitted writing and mailing anonymous fan letters lauding his work to the Chronicle.
