Weyman Franklin Hudgins

1939 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
Weyman Franklin Hudgins died in St. Augustine, FL on August 11th, 2018. He was born December 7th, 1939 in Jacksonville, FL, the son of Frank and Eleanor Hudgins. In 1968, he married MJ Robinson, whom he met at Syracuse University. They divorced in 1980. Upon his return to St. Augustine in 1995, he met Shellie Vail, with whom he spent the remainder of his life. At the time of his death, he was a member of St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church. Weyman joined the United States Air Force in 1961, advancing to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. While serving, he graduated from Syracuse and attended Yale University, studying Mandarin to become an interpreter, most notably decoding messages during the 1968 USS Pueblo incident. He was later stationed in Okinawa, Japan before resigning his commission in 1970. After leaving the service, he worked as a radio broadcaster, carpenter, and insurance salesman. But his true passion was music. A lifelong singer, he participated in countless performances, both religious and secular, including a memorable appearance at Carnegie Hall in New York City with the chorus supporting Monroe Crossing. A proud member of the First Coast Opera, the Community Chorus, and the St. Augustine Chamber Singers, he was deeply devoted to promoting the musical life of St. Augustine. He is survived by his partner Shellie, his children Benjamin Hudgins and Elizabeth Hudgins Buchanan, his sisters Elizabeth Wells and Lindsay Timmerman, and his beloved extended family. His memorial service will be held at St. Cyprian's on September 29th, 2018 at 1pm, with military honors and a reception to follow. Burial will be a private family gathering.
