Joseph ARVAY Obituary

1949-2020 It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Joe Arvay on December 7, 2020 at the age of 71 from a heart attack. Joe was a high profile lawyer in B.C. for decades and a leading constitutional litigator. Joe was born and raised in Welland, Ontario and attended St Kevin's School and Notre Dame High School. He is the holder of law degrees from the University of Western Ontario and Harvard University. Joe was predeceased by his parents James and Laura Arvay and father and mother-in-law Frank and Eleanor Addario. He is survived by his loving wife Connie Addario and children, Emily, Louigi, Hannah, Carmen, Gina and six grandchildren, who adored him. He is also survived by his two sisters, Maryjane Cruise and Jeanne Pender. Joe was one of the finest constitutional lawyers in Canada appearing in over 70 cases at the Supreme Court of Canada. He was a tireless advocate for human rights, indigenous peoples and countless other marginalized or disadvantage groups. He donated thousands of hours of his time to defend the rights of people and he did so to make our country a better and more equal place. He helped bring about sweeping legal changes to Canada, including same sex marriage and the right to a medically assisted death. Joe was a recipient of many awards and honors. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from York University, Osgood Hall Law School and the University of Victoria. In 2017, he became an Officer of the Order of Canada, one of Canada's most prestigious civilian and in 2018 was awarded the order of British Columbia, the highest form of recognition the province can extend to its citizens. He was also an avid athlete, enjoyed cycling, fishing, sailing and skiing. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends and remembered for his sense of humor, intelligence, charm, wit and love of family. Donations in honor of Joe's memory can be made to the Hope Centre in Welland, Ontario. www.thehopecentre.net

Joe changed my life, passing his love of sailing on to me. You will forever be in my heart.

Joe was truly a hero to so many of us in this beautiful country he loved of Canada .
His good works will live on in the freedoms that we will continue to enjoy because of him.
Back in the day in Welland I was his 12 year old babysitter.
He was the cutest little guy ever and stole my heart forever.
I knew Joey and his wonderful parents Jim and Laura and sisters twin MaryJane and Jeanne since he was a six month old and I saw his kindness to all and his joy of family and life grow. His goodness grew deeply within him as he grew.
His courage, wisdom and strength were amazing along with his humour, gentleness and deep sense of love, loyalty and kindness to all.
He was a good friend and neighbour to my parents Edie and Brit Phillips on Price Avenue and remained their loving good friend all their lives. He was a great friend to me and my husband Charlie and our sons, and was always ready to help me whenever I needed him.
My love and deepest symphony to his loving wife Connie and family, loved daughter Emily and family, adoring sisters twin Mary Jane and family and Jeanne and family.

As Garth Brooks song says I know he enjoyed “the Dance”

The world is a smaller, less safe place without Joe in it. He was inspirational to work with, bringing out the best in my own efforts, in that determined way he always reached for his own best, and the greater good. Always on the side of the angels. He would always have left some very big tasks unfinished. I hope someone is up to the job of finishing the ones he did.

You are missed, will be missed, and not forgotten.

I met Joey (& Maryjane) during the 'Piano Lessons' time of our lives, waiting nervously for Sister Alphonsa to call our names. He was adorable! He had a wonderful smile that bordered on mischievous. I got to know him better when I was friends with Carol (Ann) Fishman. We all followed different paths, but every time I saw him, he was friendly and so interested in my life. Being a Welland High girl, we joked about Notre Dame's hold on the Tribune Tournament. We lost touch, but I followed his career with great interest and with lots of 'small-town pride'. I extend my sincere feelings of sympathy to his family. Losing Joey is devastating for all the people that he loved. May his memory always serve as a great comfort. Rest in peace, dear Joey.

Such very sad news. My deepest condolences. I helped look after Laura at Heidehof. She was my all time favourite. I miss her still as I'm sure you do. Brenda.
