Dorothy BURTON Obituary

Dorothy Burton, age 73, peacefully passed away at home on Thursday, January 28, 2021, surrounded by her family. She was born March 28, 1947 to parents Norman and Erma (Armstrong) Nesbitt (predeceased). Dorothy is survived by her beloved husband Donald Burton, her two beautiful daughters Tammy (John) TenBroeck-McLachlan and Shelley TenBroeck, and wonderful grandchildren Parker and Kyleigh TenBroeck. She will be forever cherished by her niece Karen Ward, nephew Steven Ward and son-in-law John McLachlan. Dorothy is also survived by her sister Joan (Charlie) Stewart and family, along with many other family and friends whom she loved and touched deeply. Dorothy had a career as a hair stylist and worked at Videls Hair Salon while raising a young family and continuing her education. In 1977 she became a Registered Nurse. She was passionate about nursing and had a fulfilling career at the Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital. She was devoted and kind-hearted to the health care needs of her patients. Amongst her many talents Dorothy loved working in her gardens and took great pleasure nurturing her flowers, the birds, and especially Monarch butterflies. Springtime was her favourite season to watch the birth of fresh blooms and the delightful new beginnings. She loved cats, the horses and whinnying of new foals, little frogs and their bizarre sounds pulse in a kind of crepuscular symphony and collecting caterpillars. Dorothy was also quite the visionary with a creative imagination. Her works of art included many sewing, knitting, crocheting, and cooking projects made with love. She spent hours crafting and cooking with her grandchildren in hopes of passing along treasured moments and skills. Dorothy was vibrant and lived life to the fullest with friends and family. She was a supportive mother, loving spouse, and dear friend. Her smile and sense of humour will always be missed. As she closes her eyes and soars into the Heavens may we hear the faint flutter of her wings forever in our hearts. Special thanks to palliative care nurses Colleen, Trina, and Jocelyn, Dorothy's niece Karen, and her two daughters Tammy and Shelley, who provided so much love, care, and compassion in her journey. Notable thanks to Nora Bridges at LHIN for her assistance with coordinating the home health care team, Dr. Wasserman, Dr. Ysselstein, and many family friends and neighbours who were a wonderful support for the family. Cremation and a private service has taken place. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be given to the St. Catharines Walker Family Cancer Center or Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region, flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Dorothy. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date in the summer or fall. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the HAINE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 26 Ormond Street South, Thorold.

I just learned of Dorothy's passing this week. My condolences to Don, Tammy, Shelley and others in the immediate family. I last saw Dorothy at her mom's funeral. She looked terrific and even though our meeting was during a time of sadness, she still managed to reveal her warm and pleasant personality. We will all miss you, Dorothy.

Dorothy was so kind and supportive and very helpful when my Mother was a patient at the Shaver. Her door was always open to family for advice and she showed genuine caring and interest in persons with whom she was involved in her work. She meant a great deal to our family and our Mother. I am saddened to hear of her passing. She made a difference in our lives and care for our Mother meant so much to us during a difficult time in our lives.

Condolences to Dorothy's family. I met Dorothy at Vidal's ( early 80s) she would pop in for a social visit. She helped solidify my idea to go for my RN. My first job was at the Hotel Dieu on Ontario St. I am now finishing my career at the Hotel Dieu Shaver. I am very thankful for her encouragement and drive. Heaven has gained a very special person!

My sincerest condolences to all Dorothy's family.
I had the gracious honour of working with Dorothy at the HDSH.
I loved out talks and the laughs we had together. Her smile and just being around Dorothy I knew it would be a great shift.
