George Whalen Obituary

Whalen, George R.

George R. Whalen age 79, died Monday evening, September 23, 2013 at Harmony Assisted Living Center, under the care of Aspirus Hospice, with his family at his side.

A Mass of Christian Burial for George will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday September 27, 2013 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Rev. Thomas Lindner will officiate. Burial with full military honors will be at the Guardian Angel Cemetery. Friends and relatives will gather to share memories from 4:00 - 7:00 PM Thursday evening at the Shuda Funeral Chapel - Stevens Point. A prayer service will be at 6:30 PM at the funeral chapel. Visitation will also be held from 9:30 AM Friday until 10:15 at the church. A memorial in lieu of flowers will be established in his name.

George was born November 10, 1933 in Middleton, the son of George and Margaret (Reiels) Whalen. He grew up in Waupaca and graduated from Waupaca High School in 1952. He later served three years in the Army/Air Force and was stationed overseas. In January of 1957 George married Betty Bozile. The couple lived in Appleton for seven years until moving to Stevens Point in 1964, where they have resided since.

George worked for the Wisconsin State Patrol as a transportation inspector for 28 years until his retirement in 1992.

Along with spending time with family and friends, George enjoyed a variety of hobbies including hunting and fishing, bowling, camping and following the Brewers and Packers. He also enjoyed visiting casinos and loved finding special treasures at rummage sales. During his nearly three years at Harmony, he enjoyed bird watching, bingo, and spending time outside.

George is survived by his wife Betty; children, James, Waupun; Richard, Wausau; David, Sussex; Susan, Stevens Point. Grandchildren: Caitlin, Aleesha, and Bobbie Jo. His daughter-in-law Betty, brother-in-law Howard and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to thank George's doctors and the staff at Aspirus Hospice and Harmony Assisted Living for the compassionate care and friendship shown to George.

George inspected our bus fleet for many years. He was a fine man with a great sense of humor whom we always looked forward to working with. He often regaled us with stories of his Blackjack playing adventures in Las Vegas. He was very good at his bus inspection duties, but always reasonable and we admired him for that. I would like to extend my sympathies to his family.
