Laurel Scaffidi Obituary

Scaffidi, Laurel

Laurel Scaffidi, 52, of Amherst Junction, died peacefully at home on her birthday, Saturday August 15, 2015. Her death followed a nearly decade-long battle with a rare neurological condition. This condition, which robbed her of many of her abilities, could not break her spirit.

Laurel was known for her endless energy, can-do attitude, sense of humor, and love of adventure. She was passionate about all things horses and passed down her passion to her daughters, of whom she was immensely proud.

Laurel was born on August 15, 1963 in Valders, WI, the daughter of Edwin Mayer and Vera "Vickie" Mayer. She married Don Scaffidi at St. Peter Catholic Church in Stevens Point on October 29, 1988.

Laurel will be greatly missed by her husband, Don, and daughters Alexandra and Abigail. She will also be missed by sisters, Melanie (John) Albright and Lisa Mayer (Don Sharek); brother, Mark (Kathleen) Mayer; brother-in-law, Sam (Linda) Scaffidi; sisters-in-law Marjorie Scaffidi, Joanie (Jeff) Scheirer, Julie (Peter) Schmitz, Maria (Dave) Koch, and Carla (Dan) Gilchrist; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Laurel was preceded in death by her parents and her parents-in-law Sam and Mary Scaffidi. A memorial in her name will be established at a later date.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 27 at St. Bronislava Catholic Church in Plover. Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the Church. Also, all are welcome to join the family at a reception to remember Laurel from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday August 26, 2015 at Sentry World, 601 N. Michigan Ave., Stevens Point. Pisarski Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family. For on line condolences please visit www.pisarskifuneralhome.com

The loving care that Laurel received allowed her to remain in her home throughout her entire illness. Special thanks to all friends, family, and caregivers who assisted the family with Laurel's care.

Laurel sat in front of me in her days at Sentry Insurance. I remember her planning her new home. She was so excited. She never forgot her Sentry friends, always stopping to chat when she saw you. Don & girls , I am so sorry for your loss.

Our love to you all: Don, Abby, & Alex. We will always remember the fun summer time shared boating on the river with Laurel & the family. Sara mentioned getting to know Laurel while boating & liking her so well. While helping with your move we have fond memories of Laurel being so happy showing us all your lovely home & the wonderful kitchen decor from her selections of cabinets & counter tops. Her love of horses being so strong that she was helping the builders get the stable completed as soon a possible by dropping the sides into the frame in order to provide her horses a nice inside place to train. She was a go getter even taking apart her own wash machine to try to fix it in order to not wait longer until a repair man could get there. So good with your daughters taking them across the country traveling to the horse shows.
A very strong woman. You are all in our prayers. Don, you have been a very good friend to Doug. Thank you, Doug & Sue

Don and girls I am so very sorry for your loss. Laurel was a special person and she loved her family and spending time with her horses. She would always come into the Portage County humane Society and see me and donate for the animals. She had a heart of gold.

Don and daughters, my most sincere sympathy for the loss of Laurel. I met her only briefly years ago, through my daughter Kris, as she was showing us your beautiful new home in Amherst, that you both would soon be moving into. She was so welcoming, and an excited, proud, and joyful newlywed as she looked forward to married life in the country. I'm sure she left many wonderful memories with all the lives she touched. Peace and Blessings to her family.
