Jane Brauer Hunter

Hunter, Jane Brauer Jane Franklin Brauer Hunter passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2013. She was born in Albany, NY and moved to St. Louis at a young age. She married Arthur J. Brauer, Jr., President of Brauer Brothers Shoe Company in 1938. In the late 1940's and 50's she was active in the design of the company line of women's footwear and was elected to the Fashion Institute of America. In 1951 she was featured in The Christian Science Monitor as a mother of three making her mark in the fashion industry - an unusual combination at the time. Mr. Brauer died in 1956 in an airplane accident along with their daughter Becky. Mrs. Hunter donated the funds to restore the main building at John Burroughs School named in their memory. In 1959 she married Lee Hunter, founder of Hunter Engineering Company. They lived at Hunter Farms in St. Louis County where, in the 1960's Mrs. Hunter founded the Etcetera Shop, a non-profit antique shop with proceeds going to charity. Mr. Hunter died in 1986. In the 90's she was married to A. Bryan MacMillan. Mrs. Hunter was a generous benefactor to numerous St. Louis institutions including Opera Theater, The Animal Protective Association and The Missouri Botanical Garden. Mrs. Hunter is survived by her two sons, Arthur John Brauer III (Marie) and Stephen Franklin Brauer (Camilla) both of St. Louis, 6 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren. She is predeceased by her older sister Frances (Mrs. Welles Adams) of Gulfstream, Florida. Services: A private graveside service will be held.
