Marie Oetting Obituary

Oetting, Marie Dorothy Prange Marie passed away on Tuesday October 9, 2018, at the age of 91. Loving mother of David Prange Oetting (Mary) and James William Oetting; dear grandmother to Jonathan Oetting (Katie) and David Oetting Jr. As she was affectionately known to friends and family, Ree Ree was the daughter of Hilda and Elmer Prange and was married to her loving husband William J. Oetting for 44 years until Bill's death in 1994. Marie lived her life with an open mind, open heart, helping hand, and a passion for learning. Ree had a zest for life, a charming smile and devoted time to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Edgewood Children's Home and Ladue Chapel. She was active on the boards of Eden Seminary, Care and Counseling, American Youth Foundation among others. She quietly helped individuals who needed a financial boost to reach their educational goals. Marie was influenced throughout her life by her beloved AYF Camp Miniwanca My own self at my very best all the time and living the four-fold way (Mental, Physical, Social, and Religious) was ingrained in her and, through her, others. More recently, Ree Ree was an early supporter of and passionate volunteer for the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, a founding member of the Friends Committee and a longtime member of the Plantasia Gala Committee. It thrilled her to introduce friends to the important mission of the Center. Marie's love of and dedication to Washington University has never wavered. She graduated with an economics degree in the great class of 1949. Crowned Homecoming Queen her junior year, Ree Ree was president of the Mortarboard Society, President of the Panhellenic Society, Freshman Orientation CoChairman, President of the Women's Athletic Association and Member of Delta Gamma Sorority. Since then, Marie never really left campus, serving on the Dean's Advisory Committee for Arts & Sciences, Endowed Scholarship Committee and Alumni Board of Governors. She was a lifetime member of the Women's Society, Campaign Committee for Planned Giving, Arts & Sciences Scholarship Initiative Committee and the Danforth Circle Eliot Membership Committee. Marie was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award (1994), the Eliot Society's Search Award (2001), and in 2013 she was honored by Arts & Sciences with the Dean's Medal at the Distinguished Alumni Awards. Ree's love, enthusiasm and ready smile will be missed by her family, friends, and the countless lives she has touched. Her unparalleled dedication to learning and commitment to personal growth was an inspiration to all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Washington University, the Danforth Plant Science Center, American Youth Foundation, or Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church. Services: A celebration of Marie's life will be conducted at Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church, 9450 Clayton Rd., Ladue, on Monday, November 19, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. Private Interment. My deepest sympathy to all the Oetting family. Marie was my "other' mom all these 58 years, even long distance. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to see her while living in St.Louis the last 5 years. Oh, the stories she could tell about the early days with my mom! After my mom passed away in 1988, Marie was always happy to play the role of Mom #2. She was fascinated with our discussions on how the workplace has changed for women! My grown kids were thrilled to have her over when they were in STL visiting. She will be missed. I'm so glad I saw her the day before I moved away in April. Love, Martha Miller (Betty Knickmeyer's daughter).

I met Marie through the Washington University Catholic Student Center where she would visit to take in her friend Fr Gary Braun's homilies. Marie was extraordinary in her intellect, curiosity, enthusiasm and ability to connect with people. She is one of my favorite people I ever met on this earth. Will surely miss her but so happy she can be reunited with Bill.
