Schonfeld, Helena August 31, 2006, born in Letavertes, Hungary on January 8, 1913.
Beloved wife of the late Dr. Alexander Schonfeld; beloved mother and mother in law of Dr. Gustav (Miriam) Schonfeld; dear grandmother of Joshua, Julia and Jeremy; dear great grandmother of seven. Helena died after a long illness. May she rest in peace.
Mrs. Schonfeld was educated in Hungary. In 1931 she married Dr. Alexander Schonfeld, a busy practitioner of medicine in
Mukatchevo, which at the time was in Czechoslovakia. They had three children, Alfred in 1933, Gustav in 1934 and Solomon in 1943. After the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, the family was sent to Auschwitz and other concentration camps. Less than half of the extended family survived. Helena lost her mother and her son Solomon to the flames.
The surviving family emigrated to the U.S. in June, 1946. Dr. Schonfeld set up a successful practice in East St. Louis in 1948. Helena was his helpmate and partner in the many charitable activities they supported in the U.S. and Israel. They set up a Schonfeld lectureship at the Washington University School of Medicine, scholarships at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem and an endowment at the Epstein Hebrew Academy of St. Louis. They were particularly active in the Children's Town of Jerusalem where they established the Schonfeld Synagogue.Services:A memorial service will be held in St. Louis at a later date.
