Oscar Taveras Obituary
Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras was killed in a car accident this afternoon in the Dominican Republic, his agent confirmed Sunday evening.

He was 22.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak and Taveras' agent Brian Mejia confirmed that Taveras had been killed. Both the team and the agent were gathering more information at the time of this posting. The team was seeking more information about the accident before making a statement.

Taveras' girlfriend also died in the accident, police told reporters.

"We're still investigating at the scene," an official with the Puerto Plata police told USA Today. "We've had some heavy rainfall here lately. It might have contributed to the accident.''

The Cardinals' top prospect for several years, Taveras made his major-league debut this past season. He hit .239 with a .312 slugging percentage, and he was a contributor as a pinch-hitter during the postseason. He homered in second major-league at-bat, and he had a pinch-hit home run in his first National League championship series.
