Walter Ballinger Obituary

Ballinger, Walter F. II, M.D. Dr. Walter F. Ballinger II, former head of the Department of Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine, died Friday, April 29, 2011, of pneumonia at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. He was 85. Dr. Ballinger is survived by his wife, Mary Randolph Ballinger; three sons: Walter III, Christopher and David Ballinger; grand- children and nieces and nephews. Services: A Memorial Service will be conducted at the Episcopal Church of St. Michael and St. George, 6345 Wydown Blvd., at Ellenwood, Clayton, on Friday, May 6 at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dr. Walter F. Ballinger Surgical Academic Education Program at Washington University, Campus Box 1247, 7425 Forsyth Blvd., Suite 2100, St. Louis, MO 63105; the Mercantile Library Association, One University Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63121; or the Mathews-Dickey Boys' and Girls' Club, 4245 N. Kingshighway, St. Louis, MO 63115. A Service of THE LUPTON CHAPEL

I worked in the patient office of Dr. Ballinger many years ago. He was so kind and a pleasure to work with. My deepest sympathies to his family. He was a great man as well as physician.

Walter was a brilliant and accomplished physician and an even better human being. It was my honor to call him "friend" and to work and travel with him. The WUMS Health Administration Program was also honored to have him on its faculty as Professor of Medicine in Health Care Administration.
