Hughes, Sherwood Robert passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2014. Beloved son of the late Ethel Thurston (nee Hughes); adored spouse of the late Marion Louise Hughes (nee Heyer) and father of Marilyn Sue Eeten (Danny), Robert Sherwood Hughes (Christy), Frank Joseph Hughes (Tess), and the late Timothy Patrick Hughes (Chrissie); devoted grandfather of Ann, Patrick (Mitzi), and Daniel Phelan; Catherine Hughes, Mary Josephine Poulton (Eric), and Elizabeth Hughes; Nick Hughes (Kim), Emily Cott (John), and Lindsay Bull (Ben); Ben and Hannah Hughes; loving great grandfather of Jenna, Jamie, Natalie, Erica, and Jackson. Sherwood proudly served in the Navy Seabees in WW II in the Pacific. He was an owner of Gamble Construction and VP of Bannes-Shaughnessy Construction. A favorite in his life was Kirkwood High School where he graduated in 1937. In 2009, he was named a member of the Kirkwood All-Century Football Team and later he was inducted into the Kirkwood High Sports Hall of Fame, still holding the record for the 50-yard dash. Services: Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00pm on Thursday, July 10th, at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Rd., in Kirkwood. A Memorial gathering will be held on Friday, July 11th at 9:30am at Bopp Chapel. Then, departing at 10am for Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, 2900 Sheridan Rd. Interment at Jefferson Barracks, 11am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Cardinal Glennon Hospital for Children, 1465 S Grand Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63104, or Shriners Hospital, 2001 S Lindbergh Blvd., Frontenac, MO 63131. The family would also like to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Mercy Hospital (Ballas Rd.) on the 6th Floor for their care and compassion.
