Smith, Maurice, Eugene Gene Passed from this life on June 15, 2013 at New Athens, Illinois after a short illness. He was born Feb. 25, 1925 at Coulterville, IL to Wm. P. Smith and Nellie E. (nee McGough) Smith. He was preceded in death by 4 sisters and 4 brothers and a loving wife, Betty Jean (nee Earhart) Smith. Gene served during WW II in the US Army in Europe and Rhineland Campaigns in the 2nd Battalion, 378th Infantry, 95th Division where he was awarded a Victory Ribbon, 2 Bronze Stars, and a Presidential Citation for battle. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, great and greatgreat nieces and nephews, and three special nephews: Paul Smith of Columbia, IL, Michael Smith of Okawville, IL, and Mark Smith of Deland, FL. Gene also had many caring friends of St. Louis, MO where he resided. Services: Funeral arrangements are pending. The family requests donations to be made to St. Anthony's Hospice of St. Louis, MO or to Family Hospice of Belle ville, IL. Friends may express condolences at
