Peter S. Tell

1948 - 2018

Peter Stuart Tell (Shlomo Avraham Ben Nissen) z"l was born to Norman and Jeanne Tell in the Bronx, New York on March 28, 1948 – the same year his beloved State of Israel was born. Peter as a child moved to Stuyvesant Town where he began his lifelong activism by participating in peaceful protests alongside his parents to end racial discrimination in housing there. His family later moved to Teaneck, New Jersey where he became a devoted Eagle Scout and leader of his synagogue's youth group. In college, he soon became an active protestor of both the Vietnam War and South African Apartheid, fueling his decision to pursue a career in law and public service. Peter began working in the Civil Rights Division of the Anti-Defamation League where he tracked Neo-Nazi groups. After completing law school at the University of Miami, he held the position of Assistant County Attorney of Miami-Dade, Florida for 35 years, becoming a fierce advocate for environmental rights. All the while, he completed a Master's Degree in Tax Law, visited Soviet Jewry to give away books and medical supplies, remained a very active member of the South Florida Jewish community, and adored his two children, David and Shoshana. During his retirement these last 8 years, he traveled the world, danced salsa, and enjoyed classical music. He is survived by his sister Connie Tell, son David Tell, daughter Shoshana Tell, and son-in law David Gottlieb. Funeral Services took place on June 4th at 11am at Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek in Tamarac, Florida. Burial will take place on June 5th at 3pm at Mount Hebron Cemetery in Queens, NY.
