C. Fike Obituary

Fike II , C. M. , 58, died September 4, 2007. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Esther; his son, T. C., both of Ft. Lauderdale; and his mother, Bertha, of Beattyville, KY. C. M. was born in Old Landing, KY and moved to Ft Lauderdale in 1986. He was involved in post-secondary private college education for the past 40 years and was President of City College, Ft Lauderdale, for the past 20 years. He built the institution up and added campuses in South Miami, Gainesville, and Castleberry. Mr. Fike believed firmly in the private school industry and there was nothing more rewarding to him than personally handing out diplomas to every graduate. C. M. taught and believed in community involvement. He worked with the Broward Economic Development Council, FAPSC, Gold Coast Executive Network, Chamber of Commerce, South Florida Investigators Assoc., to mention a few. Mr. Fike will be buried in KY. Arrangements are being handled by Newnam Funeral Home, 108 Center St., Beattyville, KY 41311, 606-464-8132. Visitation will be Friday, September 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. and services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the C. M. Fike II Scholarship Fund at City College, 2000 W. Commercial Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale FL 33308.

From the time City College moved to their current building, I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Fike. Although our meetings weren't very often, I'm grateful I was able to see him in June, and in spite of everything, he was his usual smiling, friendly self. My life was deeply touched by C.M.
He knew how to teach a person lifes lessons without them even realizing he was doing it. I enjoyed many hours in his office chatting about business, people, & the pleasures of life in general. Yes, he ws the last of the true "Southern Gentleman". I will miss you, Mr. Fike.

I have known C.M. Fike for 12 years. He was the type of person that once you got to know him, it seemed as though you had known him for your entire life. His dedication to education, to the students and to his family will stand as his great legacy. I am going to miss him dearly. My heart and my thoughts go out to Esther and the entire Fike family. It goes without saying that if there is anything I can do to make things a bit easier for them, it is the very least that I can do.
