Cantor Schwartzman Obituary

Schwartzman, Cantor Seymour - World renowned Cantor, Opera singer and Doctor of Music, who left many fond memories amongst his many colleagues and friends, passed away Sunday, January 18th at 79 years old. He resided in Plantation, FL since 1987. He was born in Brooklyn, NY a son of the late Cantor Abraham and Tillie. He is survived by his beloved wife Leona of 55 years; daughter Ellen; grandchildren, Brooke and Chad; brothers, Fred of San Francisco, Ellis of Delray Beach and sister Claire of Los Angeles. His greatest loss was the tragic death of his daughter Joni Shira Rosenblum, 44 who also was an ordained Cantor and sang liturgical, Opera and popular Jewish duets all over the country together. They produced a CD together called ME AND MY DAD. This past May he lost his first grandson Ira C. Rosenzweig, 26, from an accident, Ellen's son. He was a graduate of Hebrew Union College of Sacred Music, and went on to officiate at Temple Beth Shalom, Elkins Park, PA (built by Frank Lloyd Wright), Temple Beth Shalom, Roslyn Heights, NY and Temple Kol Ami, Plantation, FL. He also was a very dedicated teacher and officiated many an occasion. In 1967 he joined New York City Opera, Lincoln Center and went on to be a leading baritone singing alongside Placido Domingo, Beverly Sills, Richard Tucker, Franco Corelli and Renata Tabaldi. Seymour also performed in many musicals, including Milk and Honey with Molly Picon and played Tevya in Fiddler on the Roof. Seymour's rich, powerful and soulful voice was memorable. His many certificates and awards are bountiful. He will be remembered for his kindnesses and friendship. A guiding and humble man respected for his many contributions to society. For all who heard him sing, he will always be in their hearts. Services will be Tuesday at 1:30 PM at Levitt-Weinstein - Beth David Cemetery, 3201 N. 72nd Ave., Hollywood, FL (954)963-2400.
