Edgar Mitchell, who became the sixth person to walk on the moon on Feb. 5, 1971, as an astronaut on the Apollo 14 mission, died at a West Palm Beach hospice Thursday night, his family said.

Mr. Mitchell, who lived on an acre "ranchette" west of Lake Worth and often talked about his adventures and history making, was 85.

Among his vivid recollections was looking at Earth from afar and realizing "how fragile and beautiful our little planet was out there," said Anita Mitchell, his former wife, and former chairwoman of the Palm Beach County Republican Party

My deepest condolences go to Edgar Mitchell's family, friends, colleagues and fans.

Over the past years, I had the honor of helping Edgar write his memoir for young readers titled, EarthriseMy Adventures as an Apollo 14 Astronaut.

It was a privilege to work with Edgar and to learn about his extraordinary life, from his childhood, to walking on the Moon, to his founding of the renowned Institute of Noetic Sciences. Step by step, he emerged as a modern day explorer and visionary, helping us broaden our understanding of life on this planet as well as life in space. It takes a unique and courageous individual to make such an important impact on humanity.

Thank you, Edgar, for being a special part of my life.

To my hero, a man I most completely respect. Thank you for everything, and especially for those things that the world will soon learn about...and benefit from. Your courage, inspiration and kindness have changed my life. And, yes, my dear friend and mentor, I will "Keep Up the Work".

Condolences to his family members, all of them.

And to NASA, please remember that he was a giant who gave it his all. He did know best! Time will tell.

Godspeed Edgar, and keep the lines of communication open till we meet again!

Edgar Mitchell's vision changed my life. I had been deeply searching for those who loved Science and Spirit and IONS met that need since I found it in 1999. I moved from Pittsburgh, PA to 10 minutes away from IONS in California. Inspired by Edgar,
I've developed the "Apollo Inner Space" art project for youth. Here is a short film about that project. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nsScZcOAvY I know you are happy among the stars, dear Edgar. Thank you.

I have met Ed many times over the years, and although our conversation started with science, We always ended up talking about our respective families, Ed was extremely proud of his family, he is the very essence of a true American hero who will inspire countless generations to come.

My deepest sympathies and respect to the Mitchell family.

I was an honor to have met Dr. Mitchell a few times at his home in Florida (I live nearby). As a middle school teacher, it was a thrill. I am still telling the stories to the science students at school. I also brought along my ex-Navy Dad during one visit. It was heartwarming to see two men (same age) relive their Navy experiences. - they served on aircraft carriers during the Korean War. I am looking forward to attending the memorial service this afternoon - he deserves a great, honorable, and respectful send-off from a grateful nation.

I am saddened that I have never met Mr. Mitchell after recently learning we were practically neighbors. His first step on the Moon occurred during my first breath on Earth. As a highly intelligent individual, Mr. Mitchell realized that we are not alone in this universe. I hope his dream of disclosure will become a reality.

I met Ed Mitchell when he came home (Artesia, New Mexico) after his moonwalk on Apollo 14 - a friend of mine was working at the airport in Artesia and someone asked me if I wanted to meet him - I was thrilled, of course, and Ed was very patient and kind as we visited for a minute while he waited for his plane to come. He had been a friend of my Dad's (Glen Rogers) in high school, too - I still have Ed's senior picture that he gave my dad. I contacted Ed a couple of years ago through his website - I'm sure he didn't remember meeting me, but he was very gracious and we talked about my dad a little and exchanged a couple of more e-mails. What a wonderful man...what a wonderful legacy...RIP Edgar Mitchell - and thank you for serving your country so well.

Sept 11, 1974 Ed Mitchell wrote to me upon the passing of my father:

"As we both know, life continues to evolve in spite of the transition from matter to spirit. The transition gives each the opportunity to experience the magnificent cosmos from s vantage point that exceeds even the one from space"

RIP Captain

Dr. Mitchell and all of the astronauts were personal heroes. The courage and spirit of adventure in these men has inspired me throughout my life and career. I did not know his health was failing. I was about to contact him to try to introduce him to a dear friend in Boca Raton, now 96, who was the senior engineer on the team that designed the legs for the lunar lander. How I would have loved to put those two together.

Dr Edgar Mitchell accomplished so many things in his astronomical career that I won't ever be able to comprehend, but I will always remember this man as a grandfather to me growing up. He watched over me and took care of me and I am forever grateful for his influence in my life. Rest in peace, Mr Mitchell. I hope space looks even more beautiful from heaven than it did in person. My sincere condolences to his family and friends all over the world. I shall never forget you Edgar Mitchell. Indeed you are amongst the stars shining upon us. I had the priveledge of meeting Mr. Mitchell years ago at a weekend event in Boulder, CO.
He was kind, humble, generous and obviously quite interesting. His impact on me carried forward in my thoughts regularly as few brief acquaintances have done. Only recently he was on my mind as I once again recalled our brief encounter, so it was very sad when news of his passing was released. I am certain he has transcended to a new realm of adventure and discovery, already blessing his new surroundings with unabashed curiosity and a sincere presence of character. May your journeys continue to astound all who meet you along the way. Thank you for your service to the world and for your tenacity in exploring the unknown. You will be missed.

Edgar Mitchell was my mentor and my best friend. When Alan Shepard died Ed called me in tears and said "I am the last one now." I wrote a pilots prayer in memory of Allen. I have now written "Antares" 4 Edgar. I would be honored to present it at his service if the family would like. I am an international recording artist. If not possible I will see that the family receives a copy of the CD when it becomes available! I have lost my beloved mentor and best friend. APPEARANCE.. (original spelling)

as the tree does not end
at the tip of its root or branch
as the bird does not end
with its feathers or flight
as the earth does not end
with its tallest mountain

so also i do not end
with my arm my foot my skin
but continue reaching outward
into all of space and all of time
with my voice and my thoughts
for my soul is the universe

though you see the bird here
he is also there
the bird the tree and you and i
are only here because your eye
and your mind has put us here
we are as wind that may not be held.

Zig & Halina Sledz with Dr. Edgar Mitchell in 2010
It is with great sadness, that we have learned about passing of our family's friend, Dr. Edgar Mitchell.

Our son, Robert, who is an attorney in Washington, DC, has been a long time friend with Dr. Edgar Mitchell's son, Paul. We had an honor and a privilege to personally know Dr. Mitchell and will always remember all those fascinating discussions we had over the years. He was an extraordinary and bright man with remarkable knowledge and experience. Only 11 other people in the history of our planet have ever had that experience of walking on the moon. We will treasure the memory and privilege of having the opportunity to know such an incredible man like Dr. Edgar Mitchell was.

Dr. Mitchell's family are also the nicest people anyone can ever meet and wish for.
To Anita, Paul, Kimberly and the entire family: Please know that our hearts are with you and share in your grief.

With Sympathy and deep sadness,
Halina , Zig & Robert Sledz
