Dr. Marilyn Mailman (Mickey) Segal

Obituary Condolences

Dr. Marilyn (Mickey) Mailman Segal, early childhood activist, professor, and pioneering researcher, slipped peacefully away on November 19. To her children - Betty, Wendy, Rick, Patti, Debbie, Art, Nick, Monica, and Bruce, her grandchildren Kori, Jennifer, Brenan, Emily, Kenneth, Tom, Dave, Nick, Molly, Rachel, Dave, Greg, Peter, Tom, Arran, Danny, Caroline, Scott, and Katie, and her great grandson Jackson - Mickey was and always will be a loving presence and continuing inspiration. Mickey established Broward County's first Head Start program and its first preschool to include children with disabilities. She founded the Family Center at Nova Southeastern University, where she taught for 30 years, served as dean, and developed programs for children and families in partnership with preschools and other community-based organizations. A tireless and visionary advocate for young children, Mickey was beloved by many as a teacher, mentor, model, colleague, and friend. The family held a private funeral. A public memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Those who wish to honor Mickey's memory with gifts can contribute to the Love, Jen fund at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital (www.lovejen.org).
