Nancy Houghtaling

Obituary Condolences

Houghtaling Houghtaling , Nancy Jean , nee Hicks, was a child of the Depression, college graduate, WWII Air Force bride who, when widowed from Major Paul J. Sterne seven years later, found her calling in teaching, a career that she embraced for the next 50 years. Beginning at St. John??s Catholic elementary school in St. Petersburg, Florida, Nancy progressed to teaching Advanced English to high school juniors and seniors at Frankfurt American High School in Frankfurt, Germany, and later at Jackson High School, Jackson, Georgia, where she was voted 1985 Georgia Teacher of the Year. In 1988 Nancy and her husband Ed Houghtaling retired to Bedford, Pennsylvania, which she loved for its beauty, its changing seasons, and the warmth of its residents. After Ed died, Nancy lived the last 13 years of her life in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where she was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Parish. Nancy was first and foremost devoted to her family. She is survived by her sister, Betty Greco; by her four daughters, Susan Day, Abigail Baxter, Patricia Evans and Rebecca Bell; five grandchildren, Anne, James, Caroline, Brian and Amanda; five great-grandchildren, Kahla, Connor, Will, Owen and Quinton; and many, many nieces and nephews throughout the country all of whom were devoted to her. A funeral service and Mass will be held on Thursday, August 18, at Blessed Sacrament in Ft. Lauderdale at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either of Nancy??s favorite causes (although she had many): the Native American Heritage Association (www.naha-inc.org) or the National Wildlife Federation (www.nwf.org).
