Verle ACKERMAN Obituary
ACKERMAN---Pastor Verle Ackerman, 92, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 11, 2018 in Jupiter, Florida. He was born in Menasha, Wisconsin, on July 4, 1925 and was preceded in death by his wife Lucille Ackerman in 2013 after 68 years of marriage. Pastor Ackerman can best be described as a true servant of the Lord. After graduating from Seminary in 1949 in Fort Worth, Texas, he served as the music director at churches in Tyler, Texas and Kansas City, Missouri. He then answered the Lord's call to join longtime friends, Rev. Al and Elinor Janney at the New Testament Baptist Church in Miami, Florida. After 12 years of ministry in Miami, he became the Pastor of the First Baptist Church in West Hollywood, Florida where he pastored for over 20 years. A driving theme of his church was that there would always be a place for everyone to seek God, from people with special needs, to children, to senior adults, everyone! After he retired, he served for several years in various roles at the First Coast Baptist Church/Christian School ministries in Jacksonville, Florida. Although he started his ministry by serving through music, he was also a great pastor, Christian educator, counselor, husband, father, and friend to all. He had a heart for missions and loved working with young people just starting out in the ministry. He was a visionary and was never held back by the idea of "that's the way it's always been done," but was a champion of moving the work of the Lord forward by employing more contemporary ideas and methods. He consistently reached out to those in need and was always caring and kind to all. He was passionate about pointing people to Jesus and always worked at letting his light shine before all, reflecting what God had done in his own life. He lived a life of selfless service in humility for his Lord, and we take great comfort in knowing that he was welcomed home to Heaven by the Lord saying, "Well done thou good and faithful servant." He is survived by his loving daughter, Catherine Fitzhugh and son Richard Ackerman; sister JoAnne Meyer: brothers Bill and Russ Ackerman: 3 grandchildren Celeste, Rusty and Richie; 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM on Friday, May 18 at the Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, FL 32073. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 19 at the First Coast Baptist Church, 7587 Blanding Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32244, followed by internment at Jacksonville Memory Gardens Cemetery, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, FL 32073. A reception will follow for out-of-town guests and family at the First Coast Baptist Church.
