Fred William Love Obituary
Dr. Fred William Love, 96, passed away June 1, 2018. Born April 5, 1922, he was a native of Delray Beach. Born at home at 36 N. Swinton Avenue, he was delivered into this world by his uncle, Dr. J.R. Cason, Jr., who was Delray's first doctor. Fred's father was Delray's first registered pharmacist and owned the first drug store in Delray Beach. Dr. Love was the son of the late James Luther Love, Sr. and Jessie Rebecca Cason. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Mullan Love; he is survived by his four children, Betty Lee Nolan (Pat), Mary Jo Hanor (Steve), Barbara Jones (Jamie) and Fred Warren Love (Beth). He is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren who lovingly called him "Pop Pop." Dr. Love attended Virginia Military Institute and received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He then entered Vanderbilt Medical School where he received his M.D. degree in 1945. To complete his medical studies, he joined the military, commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army. He served 19 months overseas in Greece while the country was embroiled in a civil war. He also met and married his wife, Doris, there. Retiring from the United States Public Health Service in 1965 after 22 years of service, Dr. Love returned to Delray Beach where he opened his own surgical practice. He joined the staff and the Bethesda Hospital Association (now Foundation) in 1966, then joined the hospital's board as well as the Bethesda Health and the Foundation Boards from 1978-2016. Dr. Love was honored in 2016 with a place on the hospital's Wall of Honor. He retired from practicing medicine in 1988 while enjoying his years playing golf, traveling and being with his children, grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren. He enjoyed the challenge of a good crossword puzzle. Above all, Dr. Fred W. Love loved his family, his friends, his church, his country, his career, and good food. He will be missed. A Celebration of Life will be held for Dr. Fred W. Love at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, June 9 at the Cason United Methodist Church in Delray Beach. As an expression of sympathy, the family asks contributions in Dr. Love's memory be made to Bethesda Hospital Foundation, 2815 S. Seacrest Blvd., Boynton Beach, FL 33435, or to Cason United Methodist Church, 342 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach, FL 33444.
