Alan walked his talk. I was the first Black lawyer hired by the Firm, but more significantly, I was not the last.
May his memory be a blessing.

(I sent this in two days ago but it did not post - just my pictures did, see July 7th)
The world has lost one of its most humble and righteous persons, Alan Becker. Alan has been my friend for 70 years. We met in the fourth grade. This was the beginning of a lifelong relationship. Alan was the best friend anyone can have. He was always there when I needed him for advice and always volunteered to help me without me having to ask. His reputation for honesty and integrity with anyone who even remotely knew him or knew of him was beyond doubt. He was a pioneer in the fight for equality and justice for all people and this was ingrained in his being. I know this because, as I said, I knew him forever. I will miss him very much.

I knew Alan many years ago through his lifelong friend, Howie. At ages 12-13, Howie, Alan , my best friend and I took a few dancing lessons in a studio above some stores in Bensonhurst. I guess our parents wanted to prepare us for the upcoming Bar Mitzvahs. So long ago, but such a happy memory.
My heartfelt condolences to all Alan's loved ones. I hope you will take comfort in a life so very well-lived.

Back in July 1980, I joined the then firm of Becker, Poliakoff & Streitfeld in their legal department. This was a time when the firm specialized in condominium law. Most cases were in regard to condominium and association law. Many many of their cases are in the law books regarding unjust enrichment, unconscionability and the like relating to long-term recreation leases owners were bound by at that time. This changed thanks to the genius and hard work of this firm. Alan Becker and Gary Poliakoff originally worked out of the trunk of a car and soon thereafter opened their first office in Miami Beach. The Honorable Jeff Streitfeld joined them not too long after who was the main litigator in the firm. I was employed to work for Jeff Streitfeld and Mark Schorr as their legal secretary/word processor in the two-story office they had just opened on Cypress Creek Road. There were only 11 attorneys at that time and it was an awesome place to work. Attorneys and staff lunched together in the small lunch room sharing stories, laughing and having a great lunch break. They held Christmas parties with lawyers and staff exchanging funny and meaningful presents. There were many, many picnics over the years at the home of Gary Poliakoff. One of the first memorable events they had shortly after I arrived was a sing-a-long party at a home of a close friend. I remember thinking what kind of a place was this but it and our many anniversary parties were awesome and will always remain in my memories. I had some of the best times of my life during these sing-a-longs and parties. Only two weeks after I started with the firm, they hired their 12th attorney, then their 13th, and continued to grow and expand all over the State of Florida, including a New York office, and four foreign offices.
All I can say is this was a wonderful life experience for me having worked for the firm over 30 years. I was there, in fact, when Alan met and married his wife, Debbie, who remained partners all of these years. My deepest condolences to Debbie, Marnie and all other family members and close friends. You will be missed Alan.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Becker family. Alan was a friend to many, always gracious and generous in sharing his professional and personal counsel. He will be missed, but long remembered for the kind and caring person who made many sacrifices and contributions to better our lives and those of generations to follow. May he rest in peace.

I was very sorry hear of Mr. Becker's passing. Back in the late 1970's and early 1980's I worked part-time at Becker & Poliakoff. Mr. Becker was always nice and respectful to those who worked there. Prayers to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace.

I want to express my sincerest condolences to Alans family. I got to know Alan through our work together on the Board of the Miami-Dade Beacon council. Alan did an outstanding job as a board member and also in his capacity as Chairman. He had a lot always going on but yet was always cool, calm and collect, the ultimate professional. Alan, thank you for your commitment to our community and for touching so many peoples lives that are now better because of it!

Alan was an amazing man. He was brilliant and kind and he made the world a better place. Now he has graduated from the school of life with high honors and returned to heaven. Heaven is brighter and warmer now that Alan's soul has returned. He will be missed but we will see him again.

My sympathy goes out to the family upon the loss of Alan. We met as classmates in 1969, became adversaries in the courtroom for many years and colleagues for years as well. He was a brilliant lawyer with a keen intellect coupled with a sense of humor. The testaments to his career will clearly fall short of describing the overwhelming impact he had upon the legal community as well as his friends and family.

I am so saddened to hear of Alans passing. I will always remember him as a kind and generous person. Despite all of his accomplishments, he remained a modest man and treated everyone with dignity and respect. I truly admired him. My deepest condolences to Debbie, Marni, Alana, and the entire family.

Marni- I'm not sure if you know my name- Maxine Cohn. My daughter is Meredyth Cohn Deighton. I am so sorry for your loss. My father worked very closely with your dad on condo law. My father, David Unterberg, even traveled together for work as my dad was an attorney in NYC and seemed to click with your father as to the injustices in condo law. They were both advocates for condo reform. You went to NMB with my daughter, Meredyth- Your dad was a remarkable attorney and a loss for you as well as the community. I remember many a conversation with my dad about the remarkable work that they were doing to save unsuspecting condo owners from fraud. My thoughts are with you today.....it is not easy losing a parent.

Alan Becker and Gary Poliakoff were true leaders and visionaries on many fronts. One of course in condominium law which built their firm and the other was in community involvement. When there firm was on Stirling Road, they were one of the first law firms to have events with speakers. They gave a platform for new and seasoned politicians as well as speakers for a variety of causes. We all went in those days to hear people speak. It was the place to be and a place to learn. It was at their law firm I first was introduced to Debbie Wasserman Schultz. I was with a friend and I remember saying, "Watch that woman, she is going places!!!!" Sad to think they are both gone but their beliefs and lives have set many precedents for the law firm to follow.

I am so sorry that today the world lost a brilliant, compassionate and a modern renaissance man! Is it irony or divine intervention that Alan, who loved the law with all its intricate nuances, passed away on the day that our country celebrates the very existence of those laws...I am so very sad for the 4 very beautiful women in his life as well as his princess Sabrina and for Roie and Adam who were so incredibly lucky to have him as their role model.
I wish that he could have had many
more years to enjoy this life; his wit and kindness is my very first memory of him and I feel very lucky to have known him at all.
All My love to you ..Debbie, Marni, Ilana, Lorraine, Roie , Adam and Sabrina. I hope that you will always remember that for the rest of us Alan was a man who changed the world and made it better in every way possible. All my love and respect, Lisa
Jay Steinberg.

I met Alan in 1961 when he was my counselor at Sun Mountain. We used to write each other letters during the winter. In college I was asked to write an essay on someone ( not family) who I admired and respected. I wrote about Alan. We were friends for almost 60 years and I will miss him very much. My deepest condolences to his family. May his memory be a blessing.
