Susan Katz Obituary

Katz, Susan B., Mayor of the City of Pembroke Pines, passed away on April 14, 2004, from the unexpected complications of ovarian cancer. Sue was the beloved wife of the late Martin J. Katz for 33 years. She is survived by her daughter Lauri Bontjes, son-in-law David Bontjes, grandchildren Jackie and Martin Bontjes, brother Gerson Paull, sisters Leah Paull and Linda Gray, nephews Brett Landsman, Joshua Landsman and Ben Paull, and nieces Julie Gross and Kathryn Paull. Born in New York, Sue lived in South Florida most of her life. She was a realtor and was active in politics for many years. In 1998 she was elected to the Pembroke Pines City Commission in a landslide upset victory against an incumbent. In 2002 she was reelected without opposition. On March 9th, Sue again defeated an incumbent to become Mayor. During her six years of service representing the citizens of Pembroke Pines, she dedicated herself to protecting and improving the quality of life in her community. She was known for being accessible, caring, and getting things done. Sue was devoted to her family. As the oldest sister, she served as the inner core of her family for advice, support and assistance. Her home was the center of family activity. As "Grammy," she relished spending as much time as she could with her grandchildren. Sue delighted in helping children and regularly visited her community's schools to participate in a wide array of events, from reading circles to graduations. Sue was committed to helping citizens with special services, such as bus transportation from Century Village to shopping and medical appointments and special transportation for disabled citizens. Sue strongly believed in the need for balanced growth so that adequate transportation, education, and recreation needs of the community could be met. She was particularly proud of her work for the new stadium at Flanagan High School and getting funding for the Arts Park. Sue earned her B.A. degree in Business Management from FIU. She served on numerous boards, including the Broward County Planning Council, the Broward County Coordinating Board for Transportation Disadvantaged Services, and the Broward Cultural Council. She was active in the local chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women. She received many awards for her dedicated public service. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2004, at the River of Grass Auditorium, Pembroke Pines Charter High School, 17189 Sheridan Street. Interment will be at Temple Beth El Memorial Gardens, 4900 Griffin Road. Shiva will be observed at Sue's home, 1101 Bel Aire Drive, West (in Grand Palms) on Thursday immediately following the interment and Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Mayor Sue Katz Scholarship Fund, Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation, Inc., City Hall, Pembroke Pines, Florida 33026.

I will always remember Sue fondly. After her passing I became involved with Jail and Bail for Cancer Research. At the first meeting I attended, I was asked what brought me there. I told them about how Sue's passing had affected me. Twenty-One years ago, and I still remember her and the good she did.

Dear Lori:

I was so sad to hear about the loss of your mom, Sue. I know how close the two of you were and I know how much she loved her grandchildren. I always admired her strength and thought she was a "neat" lady. She will be greatly missed by all.

First, my condolences to Sue's entire family. You all know what a great mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt she was.

For me, Sue was a mentor and a friend. It all started almost seven years ago when she first decided to run for city commission . . . that is how my entire family first got to know her.

But, I mostly remember her for the interest she took in family . . . whether it was the sincere joy she expressed in my oldest daughter Allison's successes or proudly displaying in her office the picture by youngest daughter Laura draw six years ago (when she was seven)for her; I know she genuinely cared about my family.

As I write these words I feel the sadness wash over me and the only words I can say are "Sue, I will miss you."

Your friend,

Sheila Halbrooks

To the Honorable Sue Katz:

You are now honored by standing in the presence of God. Thank you for all that you have done for our community.

Angelo Castillo

April 16, 2004

Dear Sue --

I never got the chance to tell you the many things I wanted to say. I was hopeful for one last phone call, one last opportunity, but we just didn't get that chance. You knew all this without my having to say it, but it helps me today to write these things down.

I didn't get to tell you often enough how much I admired your strength of conviction, the intense way you cared, how much I respected your work ethic. I never got to ask you the many questions that I had about your vision for our City's future. I didn't get to partner with you on the many things we would have done together.

But I am comforted that for 6 years you were my commissioner and, for too short a time, my mayor. I know that you were always proud of me and wished good things for me. I know you planned to look out for me, that you genuinely liked me, and that you were always rooting for my success. I am eternally grateful for that and always felt the same way about you. The few differences in opinion we had were minor in comparison to the so many ways where we thought alike. I will miss those discussions in particular.

I am thankful for the time that we had together and for all the advice you gave me. I am thankful for the example, the high standard of public service that you left. You will never be forgotten, Sue. Peace and eternal rest to you, good servant of the people.

With heartfelt condolences to your beautiful family and a grieving city,

Angelo Castillo, Commissioner

We are still in shock that the world and the City of Pembroke Pines has lost such a wonderful, warm human being. We have worked with Sue through the Gore/Lieberman Steering Committee and for years before that. Her commitment to her beliefs, to her religion, her friends and family, and to her political party should be a model for us all. Her commitment to the Democratic Party Scholarship Fund will always be remembered with fondness and love. The very best....she will be missed very much by this family.

Lauri and Family,

So sorry to hear about Susan. I was fortunate to have made the friendship of Susan and Martin. I went to FIU with Susan in the mid 70's when the Katz Family lived at Snapper Creek. Susan and Martin were a fun loving couple who had that special zest to enjoy and treasure each day. Be comforted by the fact that your dad is once again taking care of his Susan. I will keep their warm smiles with me always.

With deepest sympathy,
