Harriett Gay (Blackwell) Hook Obituary
Harriett Gay nee Blackwell Hook, 84, passed away at Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford, on Monday, Aug. 28, 2017. She was born in Richmond, Va., on Saturday, Sept. 17, 1932, daughter of the late Dr. Henry Conrad Blackwell and Mary Virginia Wright Blackwell.

Mrs. Hook graduated from Harrisonburg (Va.) High School in 1950 and entered Greensboro College, Greensboro, N.C., from which she graduated with a B.A. in 1954. On Aug. 18, 1954, she married her husband, Donald, in Munich, Germany, where they resided until her husband retired from the USAF for disability and returned to the United States. Their first child, Karen, was born in the U.S. Naval Hospital in St. Alban's, N.Y. in 1955. Their second child, Terence, was born in Durham, N.C. in 1958, while his father was a graduate student at Duke University and the University of North Carolina. The Hooks spent most of their married life in New England in the states of Rhode Island and Connecticut before moving upon retirement to Delaware in 1995.

Mrs. Hook was employed by Bloomfield (Conn.) Jr. High School as school librarian for 25 years. She received her Master of Library Science degree at Southern Connecticut State University in 1970, with additional summer work at Miami University in Ohio. She was an avid reader all of her life and she was the author of one genealogical book and co-author of another with her husband. She was his sounding board on many of his books and articles and his constant companion. In more than six decades of marriage they were scarcely ever apart. She and her husband traveled to 38 foreign countries and throughout the United States together. Mrs. Hook was a devoted and enthusiastic member of the DAR. She was inordinately proud of her various houses over the years, and a faithful church member where they lived, often serving in a musical capacity. She and Dr. Hook were long time members of St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church in Ocean Pines, Md.

Mrs. Hook is survived by her husband, Dr. Donald D. Hook, of Georgetown; a daughter, Karen Fowler Hook Chase and her husband, Steven Mark Chase, of Middleburg, Va.; a son, Dr. Terence Blackwell Hook and his wife, Andrea Salvatore Hook, of Jericho Center, Vt., and three grandchildren: Catherine Fowler Hook, of New York City, Elizabeth Trafford Hook, of Portland, Maine, Aimee Maitland Kendrick Chase, of Middleburg, Va.

A chapel committal service will take place on Friday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m., at Delaware Veterans Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.

Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel, Georgetown.
