Cheryl Lynn (Kluting) Hoffman Obituary
Cheryl Lynn Kluting Hoffman, 67, passed away Jan. 26, 2015, in Abilene.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. at the Elmwood Funeral Home in Abilene. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Aspermont. Interment will follow the service at the Aspermont Cemetery.
Cheryl was born on August 27, 1947 in Hobbs, N.M. to Robert Damon and Martha Lorena Kluting. Although stricken with polio at the age of 2, she had a very active childhood in Aspermont, in spite of her numerous surgeries. She and her parents were very active in the March of Dimes; in fact, Cheryl was a March of Dimes poster child.
During her childhood, she was a member of Rainbow Girls, Girl Scouts, Girls Auxiliary, and the youth choir at FBC Aspermont. She also swam, rode horses, climbed trees, washed her own car, mowed her own lawn with a push mower (on one crutch), and enjoyed beating the boys in her class at arm wrestling.
At the age of 12, she started driving herself to school. In high school, she was the manager of the basketball team and played saxophone in the band. She was also member of First Baptist Church in Aspermont, and was doted on and protected by her parents and three brothers: Robert, Steve and Mark, though there was little need for protection as she could more than take care of herself.
During her senior year of high school, she met the love of her life, Arthur "Shorty" Hoffman, Jr., and they married on June 26, 1965. They were blessed with a beautiful daughter two years later and shared 47 years together before Shorty's passing in 2012.
Cheryl held many secretarial and bookkeeping positions including Lee Medical Supply and State Medical Supply in Abilene, Liberty Trucking Company in Aspermont, and the home office at Wal-Mart in Bentonville, Ark.
While in Arkansas, Cheryl loved watching the birds (especially the hummingbirds), the squirrels and other wildlife out her window along with the inside wildlife, her cats. She also loved watching her husband yell at the Dallas Cowboys on television. However, she enjoyed most of all the visits from family and friends, with whom she would play cards and just chat. Once returning to Abilene, she loved family game nights.
Cheryl is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and David Daniel, and two lovely granddaughters and a grand-son-in-law, Brittany and Brandon Gurganus and Erricka Daniel, all of Abilene. She is also survived by three devoted brothers and two sisters-in-law, Robert and Martie Kluting, Steve and Donna Kluting and Mark Kluting, all of Ingram, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Martha Kluting, and her husband, Arthur Hoffman.
