Elbert E. Simmons Obituary
Elbert E. Simmons, age 95, of Nolan passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, April 14, 2018 at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Reverend Richard Petree officiating. Interment will follow at Slater's Chapel Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. He was born September 24, 1922 in Delta County, Texas to the late Joseph E. and Bertha I. (Brown) Simmons. Elbert graduated from Newman High School in 1941 and was on the first Mustang Football Team to play in the bowl. He married Opal Irene Ussery March 14, 1944 in Sweetwater. He was a farmer and rancher and retired from Lone Star Cement Company as a shipping clerk, had lived in Nolan County most of his life, was a U.S Army Veteran serving during WW II and was a member of Nolan United Methodist Church. Elbert was a member of Hylton Masonic Lodge # 884 and received his 70 Year Certificate and Pin in 2017, was a York Rite Mason, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and was a past member of Mamie D. Crane # 1018 Order of the Eastern Star. Elbert is survived by his daughters; Sue Rowlett and husband Bob of Nolan, Gay Simmons of Nolan, son; Stanley Simmons and wife Gail of Granbury, grandchildren; Brett Rowlett and wife MeLissa of Abilene, Amy Taylor and husband Kyle of Nolan, Amanda Chance and husband Alan of Granbury, great grandchildren; Landon Rowlett and wife McKenna, Preston Rowlett, Carson and Aaron Rowlett, Jaydon and Dylan Taylor, Carter and Kinslei Chance and Graycen and Clayton Wacker, sister-in-law; Mary (Ussery) Morgan and husband Dewayne of Nolan, niece; Rebecca Gunn and husband Glyn of Nolan, nephew; Johnny Ussery, Jr. and wife Janyth of Nolan and several great nieces and nephews. Elbert was also preceded in death by his wife Opal in 2006, grandson; Slater Lee Simmons in 2006, great grandson; Aiden Kai Taylor in 2006, sister; Lola M. McCaslin in 2002 and brother-in-law Johnny Ussery, Sr. in 1989. Pallbearers will be Brett Rowlett, Alan Chance, Andrew Wacker, Kyle Taylor, Jeremy Gunn and Kelly Wehba.
