Elvis Eugene Jones Obituary
Elvis Eugene Jones, 83, died Sunday, January 14, 2018, at Emery J. Lilge Hospice House in Burleson Texas. Mr. Jones, or Gene, as he was known to his family and friends, was born in Portales, NM, to 09/Arthur Lewis Jones and Elsie Pearl Smith Jones on September 16, 1934. He was the fifth child of seven. The family moved to Sweetwater, TX in 1937.
Gene was a good-natured, fun loving favorite in his family and at school. He graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1953, and was voted Senior Class Favorite. He met Nola Deon Webster in junior high and married her on September 10th, 1955. They were married for 62 years and had 4 children. Gene was employed at Dow Chemical company as a research chemist, after completing a BS in chemistry at the University of Houston. He was awarded 7 US patents while at Dow Chemical Company before retiring in 1986.
Gene was a talented woodworker and handyman. He was constantly building, repairing or improving things. He and Deon, used their combined talents to design and create many wonderful and artistic projects, all having their own unique, entertaining stories. He also served as a deacon, in the Lake Jackson Church of Christ, for many years. Gene suffered a debilitating stroke in January 1994, and worked, unceasingly, to overcome the disabilities left as a consequence. Not letting the stroke get them down, he and Deon traveled the United States and Canada in their motor home, visiting family and friends wherever they went. He also became the family genealogist for both the Jones and the Webster families. In 2004, they moved from Lake Jackson to Austin, eventually settling in Fort Worth, TX, in 2015, to be near family. After many years of loving care from Deon and family, Gene elected to go into hospice care after suffering advanced illnesses, secondary to the long term disabilities from his stroke. He passed away peacefully with his family nearby.
Gene is preceded in death by his father, Arthur L Jones, his mother, Elsie Pearl Smith Jones, his brothers, Joe L Jones, James R Jones, A Lloyd Jones and George H Jones.
He is survived by his sisters, Ruth A Arnold and Etta L Lynch, his wife, N Deon Jones, his children, Kathryn S Jones (Mary), Karen B Jones-Diller (John), Kelly G Jones (Karyn) and Kenneth L Jones (Carolyn), his grandchildren, Dylan M Jones, Travis C Jones and Kate E Diller, his great grandson, James, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Always the family rock and funny man, Gene was loved by his siblings and in-laws, his nieces and nephews and cousins, but was most loved by his wife and children. All will miss him greatly. Services to celebrate the life of Elvis Eugene Jones will be held at Laurel Land Funeral Home, Chapel of Chimes, 7100 Crowley Rd., Fort Worth, TX, on February 3, 2018, at 3:00p.
