Emil Brett Schattel Obituary
Emil Brett Schattel, 75, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016 in Lubbock after a hard fought battle against cancer.
He was born April 24, 1940 to Walter P. Schattel and Juanita Ruth Fleming Schattel in San Antonio. He married Joy Schaefer on April 1, 1967 in Childress.
Emil, or Big E, as his grandchildren called him, was larger than life. He loved people, his friends, country music, classic cars and most of all his family. He devoted his professional career to the state of Texas. He retired as the Regional Administrator at the Attorney General of Texas Child Support Division. Emil was an avid musician and had a band, West Texas Express, playing country music across the Panhandle. Upon retirement, he was involved in the Nifty Fifties Car Club of West Texas, serving at various times as president, vice president, and activities director. He took great pride in acquiring and restoring vintage cars from the fifties. He loved airplanes and received his pilots license in 1963.
Emil was the true patriarch of his family and took great pride in spoiling his daughters and grandchildren. He was a teacher, a lecturer, loving disciplinarian and a cut above the rest.
He is survived by his wife, Joy of almost 49 years; daughters, Deana Zaccardo and husband Richard of Amarillo and Donna Schattel and former son-in-law, Chris Hamilton of Idalou, Texas; four grandchildren, Devin, Brett Marie and Zachary Zaccardo of Amarillo and Evren Hamilton of Idalou, Texas; an aunt and uncle, Ernest and Janet Schattel; aunt, Fern Schattel; and a nephew, Paul Schattel.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Paul Schattel; and nephew, Brett Clark.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at Sanders Funeral Home.
