Gaynell (Cleckler) High Obituary
Gaynell Cleckler High went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 8, 2016. The funeral service is scheduled for 1:30 P.M. on Saturday, October 15th at First United Methodist Church of Sweetwater, with the burial immediately following at the Roscoe Cemetery. Reverend Brian Brownlow and Reverend Ryan Strebeck will officiate. McCoy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Gaynell was born on October 24th 1932 in Wastella, Texas.
She later moved with her family to Roscoe where she attended school. She graduated from McMurry University in Abilene. Gaynell married Ben High of Roscoe, Texas on Thanksgiving Day 1954. They celebrated their 60th wedding Anniversary in 2014. Ben and Gaynell lived in Ballinger, Texas for two years before moving to Sweetwater in 1956. She taught 2nd and 4th grades in Sweetwater until her retirement in 1991. Most of her 35 years of teaching was at Southeast and Philip Nolan Elementary Schools. Gaynell loved the children she taught, and was often recognized and fondly remembered by her former student in the years following her retirement. Gaynell was an active member of Sweetwater United Methodist Church. She was also a long time active member of several civic organizations in Sweetwater including PEO, Beta Sigma Phi and ladies church organizations. Ben and Gaynell loved to travel and took many wonderful trips including Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Canada and Hong Kong. Gaynell moved to Johns Creek, Georgia in 2015 to be near her son and his family after her husband's death. She quickly made many good friend there and enjoyed being close to her family.
Gaynell was preceded in death by her parents, W.C. and Dessa Cleckler, brother, Weddell Cleckler, and sister, Charlsie Richburg, all of Roscoe.
She is also preceded in death by her husband, Ben High, and daughter-in-law, Karen High, of Johns Creek, Georgia. Survivors include her son, Gary High, and granddaughters, Camille of John's Creek, Ga and Catherine Fithian, of Brookhaven, Ga.
Pallbearers will be Kendell Cleckler, Hugh Aljoe, Kyle Aljoe, Zahn Aljoe, Darrell Aljoe and Monte Richburg.
Family will be receiving visitors after the services at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 309 Cedar Street, Sweetwater, Texas 79556.
