Dr. Jerome Eugene "Jerry" Smola Obituary
Dr. Jerome (Jerry) Eugene Smola, born November 4th, 1936 in St. Paul, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at Sweetwater Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital on January 19th, 2017 at the age of 80.
After graduating high school, Jerry attended Cal Poly-Pomona in California, home to the Kellogg Arabian Horse Center, to study Animal Science. He was a student horse trainer and then became a full-time horse trainer for Kellogg Arabians. In 1960, he married Joan Howe August 5th in Long Beach, CA , and then became head trainer of Lasma Arabians in Scottsdale, Arizona. Jerry was most known for winning the 1965 Arabian National Championship on Bask, who became a renowned sire.
Although successful in his horse training, Jerry decided to attend the Osteopathic Medical School in Kansas City in 1967. He graduated in 1971 and worked four years as an emergency room doctor in Kansas City. Jerry opened a practice in Sweetwater in 1976 that was to last for 30 years. In addition to running his practice, Jerry was a member of the House of Delegates for the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association for 20 years, President of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association from 1992-1993, President of Texas Family Practice College of Osteopathic Physicians from 2002-2003. He trained many student physicians in Sweetwater, served numerous times as the Chief of Medical Staff at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, helped found the Sweetwater Medical Reserve Corp, supported the American Heart Association in Sweetwater, and was a member of Saint Stephens Episcopal Church.
In addition to his lifelong love of training, Jerry had numerous and ever-changing hobbies; among these were ham radio, foreign languages, photography, dog training, back packing, running, biking, playing the harmonica, shooting sports, and reading.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Jerry and Catherine Smola. He is survived by Joan, his wife of 56 years, and their children: Jeremy and wife Stephanie; James and wife Elaine; Raymond and wife Kay; Richard and wife Tracey; Renee and husband Greg; as well as grandchildren: Chris and wife Annie; Jetti and husband Josh; Jenny; Jessica; Jeri; Rebekah; Lily; Royce Jerome; Molly; and great-grandchildren: Josh Jr.; Isaiah; and Castiel. He is also survived by his siblings: sister Carol and husband Robert Dargy; sister Mary Pat and husband Richard McCormick; and brother Robert Smola and wife Bonnie.
The family especially thanks Tammy Flores, Misty Escobedo, Sophie Galvin and Sally McClusky for helping to care for Jerry and keeping him happy and comfortable at home. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for memorials to St. Stephens Episcopal Church, the Rolling Plains Hospital Auxiliary, or the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association Foundation Fund.
A memorial service will be held at 10 A.M. Monday, January 23, 2017 at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Father Jared Houze officiating. A family visitation will be held from 3 to 5 P.M. Sunday afternoon, January 22, 2017 at McCoy Funeral Home, 401 East Third St., Sweetwater, Texas 79556.
