John Nathan Meadows Sr. Obituary
John Nathan Meadows, Sr., age 89, passed away Jan. 9, 2015 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. A visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015 at McCoy Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19, 2015 at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Reverend Jake Wade officiating. Masonic rites will be performed by members of Sweetwater Masonic Lodge #571. Interment will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015 at Shiloh Cemetery at Corinth, Texas under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
John is survived by his sons, John N. Meadows, Jr. of Armona, Calif., James M. Meadows of Fort Worth and Barry W. Meadows of Burleson; one brother, Charles Wayne Meadows of West Virginia; five grandchildren; and great-nephews, Clem Howard III, James Michael Howard and William Shane Howard, all of Sweetwater. He is also survived by several other great-nieces, nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vergie on Jan. 18, 2008; parents Jack N. and Thelma C. (Taylor) Meadows; one brother; and one sister.
He was born May 29, 1925 in Denton, Texas. John married Vergie L. Hickey on Oct. 27, 1945 in Fort Worth. They moved to Sweetwater in 1960 where John worked for Mott's Five and Dime for 45 plus years and was district manager for many years until his retirement. He was a United States Navy veteran serving from 1943 until 1946. He was a member of Highland Heights United Methodist Church, Gideons, Woodmen of the World and the VFW. John served on the Sweetwater City Council for two terms and served as mayor for two terms. He became a Mason in 1958 in the Fort Worth Masonic Lodge # 942 and then affiliated to the Sweetwater Masonic Lodge #571 in 1963. He received the 50 year service award in October of 2007. John served in many positions of the Lodge including Worshipful Master 1980-1981. He also served as District Deputy Grand Master 2000-2001. Other Masonic Bodies he was affiliated with included Knights Templar, Sweetwater Commandery # 89, York Rite, Waco Scottish Rite Temple of which he was a 32nd Degree Mason, Suez Shrine Temple in San Angelo and was a member of Mamie D. Crane OES # 1018. He was also a member of the Fisher County Masonic Lodge # 703.
