Joyce Yvonne Smauley Obituary
Joyce Yvonne Smauley, 85, of Baird, went peacefully to be with our Lord on July 19, 2015. Her time here on earth was a blessing to all who met her. Always a smile, always an encouraging word, always a warm heart, always full of grace. Joyce was petite in stature, yet she had strength and courage in the face of adversity. She knew how to love, how to fight and how to persevere. Joyce modeled and taught these skills to her family and we are forever grateful.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at Parker Funeral Home, 141 E. 3rd Street, Baird, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday morning, July 23 at First Baptist Church, 240 Race Street, Baird TX, with Reverend Jimmy Hatcher and Reverend Steve Peace officiating. Burial will follow at Ross Cemetery, Spencer-Price Addition, in Baird.
Joyce Yvonne Glass was born on March 27, 1930, to Clyde and Olivia Glass. She was raised and attended school in Sweetwater, graduated from Sweetwater High school in 1947 and began her career at Sweetwater Production Credit. She married Floyd Smauley on Oct. 14, 1951. In 1956, the couple moved to Abilene, where Joyce's career became a stay at home mom with their two children. The Smauley family moved to Baird in 1962. For the next 11 years, Joyce cared for her family and made certain each of them had a loving home with nurturing meals, welcoming shelter and an abundance of prayers as they lived, worked, played, grew, learned and thrived. Joyce resumed her "outside" career at the Callahan County Clerk's office in 1973. After 20 years of service to Callahan County, she retired and enjoyed gardening, playing golf and being a doting grandmother.
Known as both Grandma and Nenaw to her four grandsons (depending upon whether the grands were from California or Texas), Joyce thrilled us all with special treats like her pink thumb print cookies and her "Angel Cake" (7-up pound cake). Joyce was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church in Baird and participated in numerous community groups, one of which was the "Baird '48 Study Club." The club published a cookbook entitled "Sharing Recipes" in 1988. In subsequent years, it survived a dunk in the bath tub, as well as coloring enhancements, both of which were added by one of the grandsons. Joyce has several entries in the book, which we cherish. While we get close, we can't quite seem to do her magic on the pink cookies, or the many other wonderful items she created.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Floyd Smauley; son, David Smauley and wife Alycia, and daughter Sheila Kidd and husband Ronnie. In addition, Joyce is survived by her grandsons, Andrew and Nathaniel Smauley and Riley and Kirby Kidd; her sister, Betty Butler; her niece, Judy Figoski and husband Al; her nephew, Don Butler and wife Cheryl; and niece, Sissy Aaron.
Pallbearers will be her four grandsons, Larry Newton and Mathew Walker.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to First Baptist Church of Baird, Hendrick Hospice Care, or the donor's .
Joyce's family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the doctors and staff of Hendrick Healthcare System and Hendrick Hospice Care.
