Polly Smith Obituary
Longtime Sweetwater resident Polly Smith left this world on February 16, 2018, to join the love of her life, Sam Smith, in eternity after a long struggle with cancer-related illness. She had just celebrated her 88th birthday on February 10, surrounded by family and loved ones. Born in Van Zandt County in 1930 near Grand Saline, Texas, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of M.M. and Eva Murphy, and attended school in Grand Saline and Fruitvale, Texas. She spent most of her life in Sweetwater, Texas after marrying Sam V. Smith, Jr. on August 13, 1949. Together, they built Sam Smith Electric, a business that they successful ran for 21 years. Her faith in God was a cornerstone of her life, attending and supporting Sweetwater First Evangelical Methodist Church since 1956 where she had served as a Sunday school teacher, camp counselor, and vocalist. Along with her husband, she was also an active volunteer for Gideons International for many years, traveling to area churches on behalf of the Gideons and providing Bibles for hundreds of school children. She leaves behind her sisters Hazel Maynard, Peggy Edwards, and Patsy Bishop, and her brother Hayward Murphy. She was proceeded in death by her brothers O.J. Murphy, M.J. "Bud" Murphy, and Garland Murphy, and her sister Helen Savage. She is survived by her daughters Deborah LeCompte, Lydia Richmond, and Rebecca Marmaduke; her grandchildren Amie Squires, John Parsons, Jared Parsons, Meredith Parsons, Elizabeth Parsons, Jeana Griffith, and Jessica Ashley; and step-grandchildren Brian LeCompte, Becky Burroughs, Jacy Marmaduke, and Genevieve Marmaduke. She was also blessed with 14 great grandchildren. She will be remembered as a loyal servant of God, a devoted wife, a loving mother, and as "GG," a beloved grandmother and great grandmother.
Services will be 2 p.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories on Monday, February 19, 2018, with Rev. John Swift officiating and graveside rites at Sweetwater Cemetery. Visitation will be at McCoy Funeral Home on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.
